Jay Johnson making 1.2 mil in a sport at LSU that actually earns more than it loses doesn't seem like the huge deal you're making it out to be.

The hole in your entire argument is LSU historically is the highest revenue generating baseball program in America by A LOT and has been for a long time. LSU financially can afford to shell out an elite contract and this is one of the reasons it can.
The only programs that have generated revenue in the Black in recent history has been LSU, Texas, and South Carolina. In the last several years Arkansas & Mississippi State have joined the club.

Johnson 2 CWS appearances
How about you be fair to Jay and not compare his CWS appearance to those coaches that have been head coaches 2,3 and 4 times longer than him.

You're not considering the expectations that come with that salary. Clearly, LSU expects him to compete among the most elite head coaches.
I’ll give it to y’all, y’all can talk yourself into anything

His salary was already in this ballpark and I’m sure after this season he was due a raise. Not really sure how you think this is high

He deserved to be paid among the elites off of that body of work? A guy that was prob your 5th option?
J do you think they would have even hired him if he wasn’t just in Omaha? Why does it feel like that is why & how he became a target?

Exactly. I’m not sure why everyone is surprised at his salary. It seems like a pretty good deal for LSU and Johnson.

I was expecting it to be a decent amount more

Apparently he was a candidate before Omaha.
I can’t really speak as to why you feel a certain way Les. I also don’t think he was the 5th option
He was already making close to if not top tier baseball coach money. If you went through your process, felt he’s your guy, then no point in trying to haggle over 100-200k of what Lester feels he’s earned so far

I was too given the amounts floated for the other options.

LE, those guys were given contracts in 2018, 2019, 2020
Like all coaching contracts, the bar is raised by every year
They were given contracts based on market value when they signed.. and the market value for Johnson is what he got

I get the impression that he was a target before he even made it through regionals and super regionals. I still think Sully was target #1. But, bringing Casey in could have very well been for consulting - he's very familiar with Johnson and Yeskie (and a great consultant). And, conversations with Bianco may have centered around his experience coaching against him recently (sort of a nod to Bianco, let him get his props/extension, but really just business). Then, he blew everyone away in the interview and it came down to what Zona could do and what LSU could do.
For the record, my sources went completely silent pretty early on so this is not factual.

Based on what

Guy on 247 could be full of shite but two weeks ago he was the only one saying Bianco was not getting an offer and Woodward was still going through his process. Updated it today and said he was high on the list before Omaha. We’ll probably never know there though but to say he was our 5th choice and we’ve overpaid is silly.
You think Vitelllo deserves what’s likely coming his way? As some said the market seems to rise every few years, with more tv money coming in Johnson’s contract will probably be the starting point for the next batch of extensions in the league

Vitello took over for a fired coach and has trended up ever since. In the SEC.
Johnson has been all over the place. He’s had two good teams spaced out over 6 years but I would think that money would go to someone who has proven to sustain a top program. One that was in good shape already when he took over. I’m a process guy & on the surface that has not happened, and I have to question why. So yea forgive if all of the leaked info seems to point to the interest peaking at the time he happened to be one of the 8 coaches left.
