On a big football weekend, do you tell your friends that "we" play Bama, or "they" (the LSU football team) plays Bama?

Actually, I’ve tried not since I left LSU. Why?

It may be splitting hairs, but I’ve always felt like if you’re not an athlete or part of their day to day support staff, you haven’t earned the right to say “we”. But I did use the term “we” when I was in school. When I paid my tuition to school, it was “we” because I felt like I was a daily part of LSU. Since then, I say “The Tigers” even though I’ve been financial contributor to the university since then. The fact is I’m no longer “part of LSU” outside of the money I send. That’s how I feel right or wrong.

I watched the last 5 minutes, I thought he looked great. He made two great entry passes to the post to seal the game.

Since nobody else has:

29 minutes played
3-13 from the floor (23%)
2-7 from three (29%)
10 points
4 rebounds
4 assists
1 turnover

Not a great shooting night, but he was on the floor a lot and based on the number of shot attempts, it looks like he stayed aggressive which you have to do. 4 to 1 assist to turnover ratio is very solid. No one shoots the lights out every night.

that's certainly your prerogative, but I'd guess you're in the VAST minority. I don't know ANYONE who's the fan of a team that doesn't say "we" when referring to their team.

"We" doesn't require being on the roster or even being at the University. It just requires emotional buy-in. We care deeply about the team - kids put posters and pennants on their walls, fans buy team merchandise, we read articles, and some of us frequent fan message boards.

Referring to LSU as "they" the second you graduate and leave campus seems absurd. I graduated LSU and left Baton Rouge and state for good in 1987, but I still love the University and it's still a part of me, emotionally. That doesn't die because of graduation or geography.

I'm not a pro fan, but my local NFL team is the Falcons.
Since I don't care, I've never referred to them as "we."

Emotional attachment is the difference.

You said the strong offer is why he picked LSU. If you believe Kentucky also offered him money, then that wasn’t the deciding factor.

I respect that and can assure you that I’m extremely invested emotionally and financially. I was an athlete into Juco so I’ve always felt like as a member of a team “we” beat them because the fans were not the ones working their asses off daily to do so. The fans weren’t there running those bleachers in the 100 deg weather or practicing fielding at all hours of the day and night. So from that perspective, I was a bit selfish.
I’ve had season tickets and have donated a lot of money throughout the years to help assure continued success. Nothing like money to get you emotionally invested. But it is really more than that business side of me. As you put I didn’t start or stop loving the university when I graduated. That’s why you won’t hear me say “They” when I speak. I’ll typically will refer to the team or my favorite one is here comes The TIGERS.

I see us as fans of The LSU Tigers and not the Tigers since we are not part of that Team. We are fanatical about them but not part of them. I respect that they earn being a member of them LSU Tiger athletic team which ever one that might be. I don’t get a ring when the Tigers win a championship.
