This is a smart move to show him his path to potentially being a starter next year.

A freshman with no snaps that weighs 145 lbs would be better at this point. Burns is really bad at football.
Major Burns is this generation's version of D.J. Welter, only as a DB.
I remember Tiger fans screaming about Les leaving him in games when it was obvious he was getting torched, spun around, trucked, and generally taken out of any plays that came his way. Eventually, Welter was replaced (I can't remember if it was Beckwith or Kwon that came in for him - getting old SUCKS).
This kinda has the same feel - we keep trying to find a place for Burns on the field when he's obviously having problems playing at SEC speed. We have nothing, really, to lose by bringing in some of the youngsters and letting them take their lumps and start getting experience now.
Agree or disagree, it's just my opinion. Fire away, my Tiger brethren!!

terrible comparison. Welter stopped Johnny football two years.

Welter led the team in tackles, but was very often making plays after the ball carrier was well beyond the LOS. The difference is I don't remember Welter flexing after making a tackle 7-8 yards down the field.

Has Toviano played at all this year? I don't recall seeing him and just looked and hasn't registered a tackle. Was he suspended?

A hybrid position. Think about it as playing a Safety at Outside Line Backer
Is this like Lou Tepper “drop linebacker”? Yikes!

he sees the field a lot against Ole Miss, I think we can all conclude he was serving a 6 week suspension.
do they let suspended players play special teams?

Beckwith, who had a couple missed assignments, but MORE than made up for him from his general ability to make a play. Welter would plug running lanes 5 yards down the field or make a tackle on a slant route after the catch. Lots of tackles, lots of positive yardage for the offense.
He was just not athletic enough to play the position. Burns just sucks and then taunts after sucking. Different type of sucking.

I always thought he was better as a nickel type safety than corner
Most people projected him as a safety coming out of high school I believe. We just don't have enough bodies.

It is truly telling that nobody has been able to pass up major burns. That is probably more concerning.

I am speculating that Toviano is serving a 6 game penalty. not totally suspended but in purgatory. Hope he gets back in the game after Ole Miss.

I like the fact our coaching staff is at least willing to tinker to find the best fit to help this defense thrive
Would be nice if they could figure some of these things out sooner but I realize it's a process and you have to learn as you go in some instances
This team can still get in playoffs as the USC loss is not as bad as it seemed since USC keeps winning
________
Agree. Wish tinkering meant that neither Sage or Burns were starting for us. Time to let the younger guys play more.

My feeling is that if we see Burns and Ryan taking the majority of snaps against Ole Miss, it's time to just throw up your hands in frustration. They were both on the field in the track meet with Ole Miss last year, and the Rebels' receivers are better this year, though not especially deep.
If Burns and Ryan play a lot, LSU's defensive line will have to play out of its mind, because Kiffin will find both of those guys all night.
