My question would be, is he now going to be the #1 at Star? (if not, why even mention it in regard to Burns?)
If he sees the field a lot against Ole Miss, I think we can all conclude he was serving a 6 week suspension. Really strange that he was still on Special Teams, but maybe that was to keep him conditioned

A hybrid position. Think about it as playing a Safety at Outside Line Backer
Toviano didn’t really have Outside CB speed, but he showed flashes of ability last year put into a tough spot as a true freshman playing out of position. The good thing about him at Star is that he can probably be good enough in coverage on a 3rd or 4th WR to keep the staff from having to swap to a separate Nickel look on passing downs. If he can blitz and hold up in run support, he can be a solid upgrade in that spot.

Sounds like toviano is going to get the next Crack at star.
He really is better closer to the line. He can tackle. I always thought he was better as a nickel type safety than corner
When he played corner he was pretty good at laying the wood
Hopefully he can hold up in coverage. They are going to go at him.
I like this move. Have to start playing some of the young talent over sage and burns.

I think he played some defensive snaps in the 2nd half vs USA. Probably to get him in the flow to play more after the bye.

I like the fact our coaching staff is at least willing to tinker to find the best fit to help this defense thrive
Would be nice if they could figure some of these things out sooner but I realize it's a process and you have to learn as you go in some instances
This team can still get in playoffs as the USC loss is not as bad as it seemed since USC keeps winning

I thought a 4 week “suspension” would make more sense. Maybe they used USA game to ease him back into the lineup
Interested to see how much of him we see vs Ole Miss

Good. And about time.
Toviano was miscast as a CB out of desperation. He’s a good football player and should have been at safety and now star from the jump.

Agreed, he is another 6'1" 201 lb athletic body that can lurk around the front 6, AKA a spy vs OM/Bama, and provide coverage. I thought when Baker was hired and this DEF was discussed, Toviano had the optimal size/skills for the 'Star' position. Hope he flourishes & helps the DEF.

I think LSU has a few players on their roster who for whatever reason
are having trouble figuring things out. Either they are hard to coach or
dont have football instincts,Taviano, perkins.Great athletes but having a
hard time with assignments.

At the very least I think he’s a significant upgrade over burns in coverage

Burns at Safety is like a bad penny always showing up.

I knew Kelly read tRant, so I planted the seed for this a few days ago...

Given the way BK described the Star position a few weeks back, I think Toviano is tailor-made for it.

whatever toviano is at this point at star, it can not possibly be worse than major burns.

I am speculating that Toviano is serving a 6 game penalty. not totally suspended but in purgatory. Hope he gets back in the game after Ole Miss.

They were matching up with slot WRs and getting absolutely smoked. They also need to address Penn in coverage, he can’t handle those crossing routes.

Atkins has to play more on passing downs he has the sideline to sideline speed to cover those crossing routes more effectively

I think the best way to describe it is it's kind of like a bigger nickelback thats always on the field.
Nickelbacks and STAR are basically the same 5th DB on the field position but a STAR is going to be someone a big thicker and better in run support while sometimes sacrificing some coverage ability vs. a nickelback is more about cover ability and less about run support.
