1. Can JaMarcus Russell develop? Whether or not Oakland can end its six-season slump will likely depend on its third-year quarterback.

Cable said Thursday it's all about whether Russell can win. It has gotten to that point. If Russell fails to make strides this season, his job could be on the line. Considering that veteran Jeff Garcia is looking to take his job, Russell's progress is definitely the biggest issue in Oakland this season.

Russell, who admitted that he reported to training camp heavier than he wanted to, needs to become more consistent and the Raiders want to see him become more of a leader. If he doesn't improve, the Raiders may be in trouble in both 2009 and beyond.

for a first year starter and the youngest QB in the league 77 is a good rating. if he doesn't improve on that it will be cause for concern obviously.

Stop making every excuse in the book for him. No, he did not have a "good year" last year. This was his 2nd year with the Raiders as the #1 pick and he didn't do terrible but he hardly did "good" either.

Out of the 32 QBs who played the most last year his QB rating was 26th in the league. His comp. pct. was 2nd worst in the league. He fumbled the ball 12 times which I believe led all QBs or was close to it(which you can blame some on his OL but also much on himself). About the only thing he did well last year was not turn the ball over through the air with only 8 INT.

He's only hurting himself (well, his team as well) by not putting in the off-season work. He's being lazy, why can't you just admit that?

Would you want your #1 pick you're paying 60 mil over 6 years not put in the off-season work?

I want him to succeed as much as any LSU player in the pros but he's certainly not trying very hard like a Franchise QB should be doing.

Seems like VY and Leinart have been called busts, or at least dissapointments as well. Also, Neither of them were taken #1....and being #1 means added scrutiny.

eta: not calling JR a bust yet either. He had a nice close to the season, but for a guy struggling with his PR image coming into camp overweright again is just unacceptable.

Lebron?
The kid that stormed off the court like a child when he was bounced from the playoffs?

take the top ten QBs in the league last year and check the rating from their first year starting. 77 is a good rating for your first year starting.

people were bashing JR during the NFL Combine for being overweight ~265lbs, then he ended up running a better 40 time than Brady Quinn.

Once again you're making every excuse in the book for him. He's going into his 3rd year and if he doesn't seriously show improvement they might give up on him.

He was the #1 overall pick. He is expected to be a GREAT player. Not a mediocre player. I'm not saying he should of been Tom Brady or Peyton Manning last year or this year, but he's not supposed to be one of the worst rated QBs in the league either or have the 2nd worst comp pct. in the league or lead the league in fumbles by a QB.

You can keep making excuses for him, but the more he continues to be lazy in the off-season the tougher it will be for him to keep his job.

It's a cause for concern because he said himself he was taking charge and would go to them all and be a leader. But instead he missed one.

Go ahead and keep acting like nothing is wrong with him though...

Garcia is not the #1 overall pick they are paying 60 million to. Garcia has proven himself in the league for many, many years. Garcia had a much better season than Russell last year.

It'll look pretty bad if a 40-year old QB who the Raiders are paying chump change to compared to Russell beats him out for the starting QB job.

how is it an excuse to point out the FACT that the top ten QBs in the league had similar or in some situations worse years than JR in their first full year as a starting QB?

From his training camp pic it looks like he would have a dead heat with Andre Smith.

Were they all #1 overall picks? t was his 2nd year last year, not his first. He got in a little late his first year but he certainly had extra time than most 1st year QBs.

Why is no one making excuses for Joe Flacco? I'll give you Matt Ryan had a great supporting cast and is not a similar comparison. But it's not like Joe Flacco was throwing to Randy Moss and Reggie Wayne last year. He actually did okay for a TRUE 1st year starter as a rookie.

Valid points in all your posts.

Your kinda owning some of the JR suck-ups really.

Point I quoted would show how bad JR really is so far. Can't be argued.

Lots of JR jock-sniffers are praying at his jock that it doesn't happen too.
