Any chance TraeDez could help fill the loss? He’s 6’7 240?

I’d imagine his contribution will be minimal to the team but maybe we will be surprised.

Huge loss for team. Although I know CMM was going to play small lineup a lot this year. JR was the rock inside player we needed. Hate it for the kid and his family . Very good chance we see him back next year though.

He’s clearly not your best player, I’m not sure what games you have been watching. I’m a huge Reed fan but this whole entire offense is predicated on guard play. Our best players are all guards. He’s definitely our best big and it stings, but he’s nowhere near our best or most important player.

Could not disagree more . While Reed hasn’t been our “ best “ player this year , he arguably is our most important . We ran a ton of offense through him on the high post and if it wasn’t for him we don’t make the comeback against UCF . While the guards have been great one reason the floor opens up for then was bc of Reed being a threat . I love what chest / Collins / rob miller bring but we have no one close on this team to replace the type of player Jalen Reed is . It’s not an insurmountable loss but McMahon will definitely have some things to figure out

Well you just totally shifted the narrative, my post was saying he's not our best player. He's not...now it's he's "our most important player". He's not. Y'all did the same thing with Ward, and clearly we're not missing him. Not saying we won't miss Reed, but it's not going to cost us the season like some are saying.

If we lose Carter, Sears, Miller or Bailey....that's when it's time to panic.

Was able to attend a couple of practices and saw some scrimmaging. At that point in time I could tell you he was not as good as the guys who are playing.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that this could change, improve....but Reed got hurt very early in the game and he did not see the floor, so the staff obviously still feels he's not there yet.

Perhaps I'm am being just overly optimistic, but I can see a scenario where Reed being out might, MIGHT make the team a bit better. No, I'm not happy he's hurt and you'd much rather have him healthy, but his strengths are quite different from much of LSU's roster. Reed's biggest strength is scoring around the rim in halfcourt sets in a slower, more methodical pace. However, the rest of the roster looks to be more comfortable playing fast, with space.

Sears was a bigtime scorer last season at UT Martin who played at one of the fastest paces of any team in the country. Carter is a very good, and fast, athlete. V. Miller can play in the halfcourt, but he doesn't appear uncomfortable attacking at all. Collins and Chest are great athletes. Playing fast usually benefits those types of guys. Forcing them to try to execute in the halfcourt (offensively) generally doesn't. Fountain is an effort guy, but he's not a guy who is overly skilled. R. Miller isn't strong enough now to bang inside against bigger guys. However, he moves fluidly for a 6'10 kid. Maybe he's better in a more spread out game.

With Reed out, LSU's is likely not going to be as good on offense in the half court. But is there a world where adjusting to that plays to the strengths of the other guys on the roster? Remember, Chest was an afterthought in the frontcourt to start the season. He only played 3 minutes of garbage time vs ULM and didn't play at all vs. Alabama St. in a game where LSU got significantly outrebounding. He was clearly the 5th frontcourt option behind Reed, Miller, Collins, Fountain. Then Fountain gets hurt the morning of the KSU game. Miller starts and struggles. McMahon is forced to play Chest more out of necessity. All he does there is grab 13 rebounds in 21 minutes, and his effort on both the glass and defensive end sparks LSU to dominant road win. He's been a 20+ minute player ever since. I have ZERO doubt that had Fountain not been injured Chest would still be getting a few intermittent minutes, at best, in a handful of games. So while you NEVER want to see your guys get hurt, sometimes it forces you to play differently and, in the process, find a better way to do things.

Just a thought

Losing Reed absolutely sucks, but he’s nowhere close to elite at anything.

I may have been hyperbolic, but this team had a chance to be top third of the conference with Reed. I think expectations need to be tempered now.

I like how we’ve played but we were not a top third SEC team even with Reed. Conference is loaded this year.

The good news is we'll have a better defensive front court, but most, if not all, of your play making ability in the front court goes out the window with him gone. I like Collins and Chest. They're great defenders are true glass eaters, but they're not taking guys off the dribble from the three point line and putting in reverse layups like Reed.

Sums it up well. We have no frontcourt offense anymore other than put backs or lobs. McMahon will have to get creative.

If we’re lucky maybe Trey’Dez can make an impact as a small ball 4/5 when he switches over, but I wouldn’t count on it.

Reed brought in some weight this year, and looked like he wanted to attack the rim every possession. He defended well and still has a shot. Miller chest and Collins fountain should have enough time and advisors to compete in sec play.

It ain't gonna happen. Never does. Do you realize how far behind he is from the team? This is not high school wher you can plug him in and he can dominate with sheer strength.

Reed is far from great, too inconsistent. But on this team. he was very important. It's a big loss. Will prolly cost us a couple of wins in the SEC. Hope I'm wrong, but feel like 5 SEC wins will be about the max now.

I don’t know about that. That never hindered Julius Peppers.

I wouldn't hold that against him. He wasnt cleared medically to play in that game. Not expected to be for another week.

Now yourself and some insiders have said that he isn't ready, but I do hope you are wrong. He has legit size.

Anecdotally you can find the rare exception. but Peppers was at a different time and a school which placed more value on basketball than football. The demands of football are year round at LSU along with academics.

True, but he is a member of the BB team, not just a guy on the FB team who can play BB. I'd like to see him play as well as Boyde.
