That's the right answer.

No it hasn't. You're assuming LSU is the only show in town and no other team on the planet has a similar chance of benefitting from the portal. Kennel Blindness. Jeeez...

In the last two years LSU is second only to Georgia in the amount of players drafted. While this group doesn't autie have the 2019 talent level, they aren't at the bottom of the SEC either. I would say Alabama, Georgia, and maybe A&M have a great talent level than LSU...and that's it.

Everyone assume Kelly inherited a "mess" because of LSU's record the previous two years. However, they forget the reason LSU's record was so bad is no longer here. With an even remotely competent HC LSU would have been a 7 (due to a 10 game season) - 9 win team the past two years. Orgeron was THAT bad. The moment he fully inserted himself in the ON-FIELD approach is the moment the on field results collapsed.

O won 3 SEC games in 3 years at Ole Miss. He went 3-9 (0-8) in his final season there. Yet, he recruited pretty well. How do we know that? Because a remotely competent Houston Nutt came in and immediately went 9-4 (5-3) with a win at eventual national champion Florida, a blowout of LSU, and no losses by more than 7 points. Point being, Orgeron is good at getting players...who other people can coach.

This year's team is likely not a NC contender. But I don't think it will take 3-4 recruiting classes to get to that point again. Brian Kelly doesn't either. That's why at age 60 he left maybe the most historic program in college football, one that has been an annual playoff contender over the last 5 years, to come to LSU. There is only ONE school in America where each of their last 3 coaches won a national championship within 4 years of taking the job.

In the early 90's the program was down and needed to be rebuilt from the ground up. That's not the case now. The program just needed to rid itself of the useless anchor from Larose, LA it was dragging around.

LSU starts NEXT season in the top 10. Book it!

I disagree on Oline depth. Transfers came in with many games under their belts and that doesn’t include the younger lineman who are now Sophs and Juniors.

One of the problems with this generation is a lack of respect for their elders.

IMHO he is two people away from competing for Natties... and both may be on the team but we have not seen it yet. They are elite QB and savy playcaller that is in synch with the players and the opponents. A top QB can make up for mediocre line play. My biggest concern is our DBs but again a high performing QB can make up for a few busts in coverage

I hear you but how many Joe Burrow’s are there in the transfer portal? I feel like a lot of transfer kids are kids who got made due to lack of playing time and left their old program. Burrow is an exception. Hopefully Noah Cain is an exception.

Burrow is an exception and regardless of how he got to BR we may never see another Burreaux again. And, although I'd be happy with another, he's not necessary. We've won more NC's without him than with.

The portal can deliver talent recovering from injuries (hopefully Cain) or players in systems that are wrong for them. Players with new coaching staffs they don't want to play for. All sorts of opportunities that didn't exist before.

It's also worth pointing out that in some ways the portal is less risky than recruiting kids. There's tape on portal players. They're older and hopefully more mature.

Those who want respect need to earn it and you didn't earn it with that idiotic 3-4 year remark.

Which of these was unrealistic expectations?

Not arguing that Miles and O were ultimately bad for the program, but there's a lot of so-called big name and respected coaches who wouldn't be considered mentally challenged who would have loved to win 2 National Championships and played for another. In fact, I doubt if any Tiger fan would have traded a Big name coach whose use of language is perfect for either of the championships won by Miles and Orgeron. It's not fair to fail to give the devil(s) their due.

The SEC West is a gauntlet for sure…but after watching some of the practice video and listening to player interviews, it’s hard not to be excited about THIS season. These players look the part and sound hungry.

This will be interesting to see. You can restock talent, but can you build a team…that plays together, with chemistry, at a high level.?????!!?????!!!!!!!?!!??

Have you actually watched LSU the last two years? We had absolutely none of that except last few games of last year, we had the freaking opposite.

The OP has been following the lazy arse national narrative way too much.
95% of them have zero clue who is even on our team. Zero clue, couldn’t find Tiger stadium with a map and compass if you dropped them off by the bridge.

This is how it works boys, ESPN or some publication makes some lazy prediction based pretty much totally on what has happened in recent past. The initial top 25 is always almost identical to the year ending top 25 with just a few changes and typically almost no new teams. look at them right now and you will see.

Then they develop the national narrative on each team

Bama loaded etc - true
Georgia same- actually not true
Faggies - contenders (really since win?)
LSU-rebuilding year etc (complete bs)
Ole Miss - dark horse. Probably not
Arky, Also ran (Wrong real dark horse)

Etc

90% of sports writers are people who don’t know shite about sports who can’t write, and now they make them cover all the sports which no one could do well.

So we have been declared a few years away which is the national narrative and would be true except for the quality of the returning players, the extra years of play granted by Covid, and the use of the transfer portal to get needed depth. i expect to finish in top 3 in SEC West maybe right behind bama.

Of course, luck and injury have something to say about it. But I expect a real log jam of teams in SEC West this year. Really only Auburn is likely going to be a dumpster fire. Everyone else is going to be bowl eligible. Actual finish

Alabama
Arkansas or LSU (sleepers)
Texas AM, or Ole Miss (have issues)
Miss state (still dangerous)
Auburn will fire their coach etc

F that!!!!! If he falls behind or is losing at halftime, I want changes. Buy out his contract, have Scott go back big game hunting. We have no tolerance for that level of " incompetence ".

You are also ignoring the fact that they will probably sign 30-35 players the next 2 classes.

I don't know if Burrow was mad but he definitely transferred due to playing time.

I've been following LSU since the 50's and NIL and the transfer portal have changed the ability to structure a team in a year or less. No longer saddled by stacking talent, if you have a weakness just hit the portal and fill the need.
Nil effectively ended scholarship limitations in base ball and will eventually neuter Title Nine.
