LSU had some high moments in the 80's transitioning from the McClendon era and pretty much mucked it up with the Archer hire and the early 90's disasters followed by the Bring Back the Magic Tour which ended up crashing and burning, all of which I sat through and witnessed.

That's when Saban entered stage right even though he was still not sure about what he was getting into and not one assistant came with him to Tigertown. He took the program to heights I never thought possible and in 2003, for the first time following the program, I legitimately felt like LSU was the best team on the field no matter who they would have to play. He brought toughness and discipline to LSU football and kept the top players in Louisiana from leaving the state which impacted several big time programs and made LSU a destination school for not only LA players but nationally.

Miles reaped the benefits of what Saban started to build but his refusal to update the offense to keep up with the trends in the game began his downfall and once again LSU had to look towards Tuscaloosa for the blueprint for success. LSU had to copycat what Saban was doing in Tuscaloosa to keep up by promoting an interim coach who was willing to do that even though it crashed and burned again.

Saban did more for football in making the SEC as popular as it's been and forced the other sec teams to keep up which allowed the SEC to dominate the landscape of college football since the playoffs have started. That dominance grew the conference in stature and revenue which in turn has allowed all the minor sports to thrive and survive and now you see baseball, softball, basketball all lifting hardware.

Nick Saban had nothing to do with LSU lifting baseball hardware.

Let me call Skip and Kim to see if they agree with Saban being their savior.

Skip took LSU to 10 CWS and won 5 before Saban walked through the door at LSU.

I didn't realize that Saban won national championships in football, baseball, women's basketball and I guess also track and field too.

Busy man.

Dinardo crashed, but didn't burn. Saban had a decent amount of talent left by Dinardo upon which to build. The Sugar Bown vs. Illinois had a lot of Dinardo recruits. Of Course, Saban and Emmmert did so much to change LSU Football that has paid dividends since they left. When Saban left the Dolphins, I couldn't believe that he was coming back to the SEC, the SEC West, and Bama of all teams. It sucked, but still grateful for his success here and how he changed the culture.

Unlike other programs, several coaches contributed to the status of LSU today. We wouldn’t be where we are without Nick. But maybe we wouldn’t be where we are without Gerry Dinardo because his tenure showed guys like Nick what this place could be. Dude took a program that had 6 straight losing seasons to three straight bowl games. For those of us who were kids at the time and had only really ever seen the losing side of LSU, that was AMAZING.

Then, there’s guys like Les and O. Neither are the coach that Saban is (understatement of the year). But even they contributed. Look at all the winning Nebraska did with Tom Osborne. Over 25 years he built a blue blood much stronger than what LSU was when Nick left. 25 years versus Saban’s 5. 13 conference titles versus Saban’s 2. 3 national titles to Saban’s 1. shite, he won 3 Natty’s in his last for years. And coach after coach after coach since he left has stumbled and failed miserably. So if Nebraska wasn’t too blue blood to fail, y’all really think Nick left LSU in a better position? No?

Dude had two ten win seasons in 5 years. And that’s the legacy that was so fool proof that all Les had to do was show up and eat grass for 11 years? And by 2019, 15 years later, when the greatest college football team ever, with the greatest college football player ever won a Natty, that was still Nick? Or can we give O credit for putting together a special team and staff?

I do not dispute that Nick Saban is the greatest college football coach ever.

That said, he is not solely responsible for what LSU has become since 2000.

Hell, it can be argued he did more to set LSU back in the last 17 years than he did to bring us forward in the five years he was here.

Re-writing history is slobbing this dude’s knob after all the BS he pulled over the last 17 years. Good riddance.

A crap ton. The roster had holes for sure but it was a solid roster.

LOLOLOL

Wow. Just wow.

I often wonder how may LSU fans that post here are actual, real, LSU fans.

This is one the most idiotic posts I've ever read, and that's saying a lot.

You are correct, but there is also a reason why
Mulkey and Johnson have comparable salaries to coordinators in the SEC, and some players. Football is king, and before Saban our football was floundering. When we destroyed OU in the Natty, it changed the way the entire media saw the SEC. That would not have happened without Saban.

Most of all this reminiscing discussion has highlighted and brought back to the forefront to me me what utter and complete pieces of useless shite Joe Dean and Curley Hallman were.

The idea that LSU was just this garbage bottom tier program until Saban came along is just such hooey.

I'm not slighting what he accomplished here, which was a lot and which put us on the path to win three national titles, but BUT FOR the abysmal Curley Hallman era, we were never anything but a damn solid program and often since 1958 just on the cusp of winning it all.

Saban was a great coach - dare I say a genius coach. Two guys since him have proven it didn't take that to get a NC in Baton Rouge.

Do both have a lot to thank him for? Sure.

Was LSU destined to be nothing much better than what we had with Curley Hallman for the past 30 years had they never hired Saban? Nah. That shite was the true aberration of our program.
