Yes the Iron Bowl screwed us both times. I remember watching both those games screaming at the TV as a kid.

That's one thing everyone knows by now - relying on the Iron Bowl never gets us to Atlanta.

I mean, LSU did beat #1 Florida in 97 (who beat UT)

And the 97 UT team was good, but by no means unbeatable. They only beat Auburn in the SECCG by 1 point. They weren't yet the juggernaut that they were in '98.

and then turned right around and shat the bed the next week. We also lost to Auburn & lost at home to a mediocre ND team. Who I know we then turned around a beat in the bowl.

Average all that out and we probably lose to Peyton 70% of the time.

I will grant you it would have been a better matchup than 96 Florida. I saw enough of them the first time we played them that year

If you want some real heart burn go look up the 1998 season

4-7 with 5 games decided by a touchdown including a 7 point L in OT to ole miss, made Quincey carter draftable, and 3 games decided by FG. Including number 12 UGA, & 10 Norte dame

Too bad this wasn't an awful play call against us in 2012.

I remember being so pissed both years. One year we need Auburn to help us out in the Iron Bowl, and they lose in the final seconds. As a matter of fact, that last entire drive by Alabama was mostly the same play. They kept running Riddle out to the flat and throwing him the dump-off pass, and Auburn never adjusted for it. They just kept driving, much to the frustration of Tiger fans who needed Auburn to bail us out and send us to the SECG.

The next year, its all in reverse. We need Bama to win, and they have the game won, until (I thought it was their TE Rutledge) fumbles the game away to Auburn.

I remember hating both teams for so long because of how frustratingly close we were to making the SECG, only to lose the tie-breaker both years.

screens on 3rd and long are never an awful play call. Canada should try some damn screens

I'm assuming he means awful play-call as in "with less than a minute to play, why throw a pass instead of running the ball and punting."

I wasn't familiar with the game, but looking at the replay on youtube, Bama had the ball on about their own 35. If they run and punt, Auburn probably gets the ball on their own 25 or so with :40 or :35 left.

In retrospect, it was an awful play call. Having held Auburn to only 15 points, probably a better idea to play conservative and trust your defense.

2002. Saban should have gone for it on 4th down inside their 15 up 3 with like a minute left against Arky.

Or we could have just not let Arkansas throw 2 passes for 80 total yards and a TD with 30 secs left. If I remember right, those were the 3rd and 4th completed passes of the entire day for Matt Jones.

They ran a screen on 3rd down with 50 seconds left from the 40. They could have run the ball and punted and made Auburn go 80 yards in 30 seconds.

The Rant would have been on fire if it was around for that. Especially after the 1996 Iron Bowl where LSU was knocked out with 26 seconds left.

Back to back fluky Iron Bowls kept LSU out of the SEC Championship Game. It may be for the best as it made 2001 so special.

What a soul-crushing season that was. That's not even getting into the CWS collapse by the baseball team the summer before football season.

I remember those seasons well having been to all home games back then. I don't seem to recall us being that close in those 96 and 97 seasons though beating Florida was awesome. I have to think in the long run things worked out in that we wouldn't have fired Dinardo in 1999 if we had gone to those title games.

Kind of crazy to think how in retrospect a couple of Iron Bowls could have completely changed the entire trajectory of the program for 2 decades to come.

1997:

Auburn 6-2
LSU 6-2

Alabama travels to face SEC 5-2 Auburn where Auburn needs a win to make the SECCG. Alabama held a 17-6 lead going into the 4th quarter. Late in the 4th Alabama had a 17-15 lead and the ball - only needing one 1st down to ice the game. In just an awful play call, Alabama ran a screen pass on 3rd and 8 with 50 seconds left that was caught and then fumbled by fullback Ed Scissum. Auburn recovered the fumble in Alabama territory, and kicked the game winning field goal with 15 seconds remaining.

yep. remember that scene well. Ed scissum was crying on sidelines after he blew it. i was so pissed. we were about to be sec west champs.

Maybe. If we win those games does Dinardo hire someone other than Lou Tepper for DC when Texas hired away Carl Reese? That's what it boils down to.

The point is he would have been given quite a bit more slack in '98 and '99 had he been coming off of two straight SECCG game appearances in '96 and '97 IMHO

I know it’s not SEC championship game related but 1987 was the crusher for me . Hodson went down , we lost to an inferior Alabama team . Otherwise we would have been 10-0-1 and in the mix at the end going into the bowl season. 84-88 was a great run.
