It's crazy how close LSU was to going to the SEC Championship Game in 1996 and 1997

1996:

Alabama 6-2
LSU 6-2

Auburn travels to Birmingham to face SEC 5-2 Alabama where the Tide need a win to make the SECCG. Alabama led 17-0 at the half, but Auburn scored 23 unanswered points in the second half. Down 23-17 late in the game, Alabama quarterback Freddie Kitchens completed a touchdown pass to Dennis Riddle to tie the game, and the extra point put the Tide ahead with 26 seconds remaining.

1997:

Auburn 6-2
LSU 6-2

Alabama travels to face SEC 5-2 Auburn where Auburn needs a win to make the SECCG. Alabama held a 17-6 lead going into the 4th quarter. Late in the 4th Alabama had a 17-15 lead and the ball - only needing one 1st down to ice the game. In just an awful play call, Alabama ran a screen pass on 3rd and 8 with 50 seconds left that was caught and then fumbled by fullback Ed Scissum. Auburn recovered the fumble in Alabama territory, and kicked the game winning field goal with 15 seconds remaining.

We needed auburn to beat bama in 1996 and we needed bama to beat auburn in 1997. Both games the team we needed to win had the lead until the last minute with (1996) bama scored in the last minute and (1997) bama fumbled the ball with a minute for auburn to score. I didn't mine not going to the 1996 sec championship to have a rematch with Florida who beat us 56-10. I really wanted to go in 1997 to play against Payton manning and Tennessee.

Don’t forget that missed tackle versus Ole Miss in 1907.

I believe there were a few other years where we needed one or the other to win for LSU to go to the title game and it didn't happen.

In 1999 if we played every game like we did against arkansas we would have won the national championship.

Should build a statue of hal hunter, imo.

1995 if dinardo goes for the 2 point conversion win instead of settle for the tying extra point

Lsu was 3 yards away from going to Atlanta.

1996 Bama game was huge at the time. In 97 they shouldn't have lost to Ole Miss and put themselves in that situation.

Yes the Iron Bowl screwed us both times. I remember watching both those games screaming at the TV as a kid.

2002. Saban should have gone for it on 4th down inside their 15 up 3 with like a minute left against Arky.

We'd have gotten housed by that UGA team tho.

If that happens, Dinardo probably gets another year to right the ship and the Saban era never happens.

Dang, they were really close both years.

1997 definitely would've been a winnable SECCG against UT.

But playing 1996 UF again would not have been fun for LSU fans. They were an absolute buzzsaw that year. From a perception standpoint, it was probably better for LSU to not have represented the West that year
