After a bit of research, the worst defending champion was the University of Michigan's 1934 team which finished 1-7. If LSU finishes 1-9, I would have to say that this team would be a contender for the all-time worst defending national champion.

Of the new era, yes. But only in recent times have you had tons of guys leaving early for the NFL (and this year you do have never-before-seen circumstances with the COVID opt outs. Shelvin and Vincent would have helped out a lot (in addition to a star like Chase on offense).

Auburn's 3-9 was two years after their title.

There’s no precedent for a 10 game SEC schedule. But 2008 LSU did go 3-5 in conference play.

About twice a decade I would like to be in the conversation as being the worst national champion ever.

I’d say everything about this year comes with an Asterisk - there is a reason you just saw the single game passing record in sec broken, arky snap an 18 game losing streak, the record high points scored in regulation, etc.

Offenses are at a huge advantage this year and defensive units that carried over into this year without the attrition are way more comfortable and cohesive - this is a weird year for sure. Just look out of conference even unc va tech had over 1100 combined yards!!!

Easier to plug and play offensive guys - defensive depth charts are getting exposed this year.
