Elite players aren't always visible. See Delane. He's got half the field locked down, but yet doesn't make many highlight reels.

If Perk frees up the rest of the LB corps to do their thing, then he's elite.

On an elite defense he is 5th in tackles and first in sacks. If hurries were tracked, he'd be up near the top in the country.

I haven’t noticed him too much. Is he still an all American candidate or a jag?

He had a few really good pressures, 1 resulting in a sack against South Carolina. Had a nice tackle for loss on the second play of the game defensively.

Hes doing a lot and was spying Sellers a good bit in the second half when we elected to stop blitzing as much. Hes been making an impact and really effective but he does get washed down or taken out of a play but I mean thats the case with every player. Hes doing really well this year.

Is he an All-American? Sheesh who knows at this point there is still plenty of games left but he doesn't have to be an All-American to be an elite player for us. The expectations sometimes are unreal.

He's a "tweener". Always has been. Too small to be a great LB. Not quick or instinctive enough to be a Safety (in today's game). He's a good player. Anyone saying otherwise is foolish. But the above is why he's never reached the dominance of 2022 when he was mostly and unknown (as a college player, not a HS prospect) player who excelled in certain situations.

No one has given Lane credit for the scheme he used to get Perkins off of the LOS. He manipulated formations and motions to force Perk off the lne of a slot or in space near a slot. The extra few yards off the line gave his young QB all the additional time he needed to pass or run. I was surprised that Baker didn’t put him at DE on 3rd and long as a designated rusher or move him inside to spy. This would have been a better use given Lane’s scheme.

I just see him out of position and getting beat in coverage more often than anything else.
Point to some examples.

I don’t think he’s being used properly.

Neither he nor the staff know what kind of player he wants to be or how to use him.
Just because he doesn't get 3 sacks a game doesn't mean he's not being used properly.

While I don't think Perkins is "elite", he's always been a pretty good player. The problem is that teams have schemed him out of position. They now force him into coverage which exposes his weakness.

That said, it doesn't help that Baker tries to disguise when Perkins in blitzing by having him play too far off the LOS at times. Teams assign a player to specifically account for Perkins in many situations as well. The Weeks brothers have a lot of opportunities to make plays but oftentimes they're out of control once they get into the backfield. My biggest gripe with them is they hardly ever make big plays IN THE BACKFIELD because they are out of control and lose containment.

He's as an elite a QB spy as I've ever seen. He can neutralize a dual threat QB, if allowed to play that role by the DC.

Perkins gets the “tweener” label because he has a skill you don’t normally find in a player his size but technically he’s within the range, size wise, for a WSOLB. There are a lot of WOLBs his size or smaller. In the current NFL you’ve got Jeremiah Owusu who played at ND and was drafted around 212-215lbs. You’ve got Akeem Davis-Gaither who’s about the same size give or take an LB. There are others around that size, some of our guys like Debo Jones and Kwon Alexander who put on 5-10lbs after he was in the league awhile. Duke Riley is another one who was 215-218 when he came out.

He had 8 tackles, 1.5 TFL, and a sack in the last game. If he did that every game he would be a Heisman finalist.

Thing is if he’s in coverage a lot and we don’t hear his name, he’s probably doing a good job.

Your post made me think of something I missed; Perkins is tied for second on the team with four quarterback hurries. Whit Weeks leads with eight.

He's having a really good season. It helps when others are making plays too. Teams are scheming to keep him out in space, but the dudes he's covering are not open. Baker lines him up on the left, but he has contain on the right and gets there is crazzzzzzy.

I've been super critical of Perk in the past. I thought he lacked some physicality to years past in certain situations and I thought he lacked some of the IQ needed to be great but he's been so good this year. Year 2 under Baker and they are using him perfectly and he is executing. They are moving him around. He's playing all over the field. Never stagnant. Hard to predict what he's doing. He's been really really good this year.

And you can tell he’s much more comfortable. I would like to see him rush off the RT in 3rd and 10+ a little more but he’s been great. Baker deserves ton of credit.

Perk and Delane are THE reasons this defense works the way it does. It allows everyone else to focus on their jobs and take confident risks when appropriate because Delane has one side locked and Perk is everywhere. Lane schemed well but Lane is also 1 of 1. A better Nuss that keeps the D off the field so much and Lane calls a different game against a less tired defense.

Perk is playing All-American ball but probably won’t get the nod without the numbers but there’s not a team in CFB that wouldn’t love to have him.
