I realize we picked up McManus, but we lost Moller and Jensen

Kentucky senior catcher Coltyn Kessler entered the NCAA transfer portal officially on Wednesday morning. Kessler was the Wildcats' leading hitter in 2021 with a .349 average in 152 at-bats with 20 runs, 53 hits, 11 doubles, seven home runs and 25 RBI. He started all 30 games for Kentucky in SEC play after not opening the season as the starting catcher.

Kessler's breakout performance in 2021 was a bright spot on Kentucky's offense. He worked his way off the bench and became a Buster Posey Collegiate Catcher of the Year semifinalist. The Missouri native hit .339 in SEC play with a 1.007 OPS in 109 at bats. His seven doubles in league play tied for the team-high with sophomore infielder Chase Estep.

With a name like Coltyn you already know he was a travel ball warlord growing up.

Tennesseee already has Povolony and Jackson Greer unless they got drafted

Pavolony was drafted and Greer was a senior.

In conference play he only was able to throw out 4 of 22 base stealers which is a little worrisome, just 2 passed balls though so seems like an upgrade from McManus defensively and brings a similar bat.
22 base steal attempts in 30 conference starts though doesnt seem like anything to worry about though

Will Travinski be out entire 2022?

I do not think he will be out the entire 2022 season. He will be out a good portion of it though.

Doughty and Wyeth are non-factors. Travinski out for a while . Bianco would be interesting, however, Bianco has never sniffed the type batting average/numbers Kessler has.

Plus Braden should have his degree now, I'm sure he's moving on. He was just a bullpen catcher really.

Catchers Struggle the Most of All Baseball Players After UCL Reconstruction
quote:
Following ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction, professional baseball position players return to play faster than pitchers, but catchers return less frequently
quote:
Professional baseball catchers have the lowest return to play rate after an ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) reconstruction (59%) among different positions in professional baseball.
ETA: Depends on a lot of factors including workload, recovery, adherence to training protocol, etc. Basically, you shouldn’t expect him to be out as long as a pitcher would be but the nature of his position makes it more difficult to recover well than for other non-pitchers
quote:
Position players returned to play 76% of the time and averaged 11 months until return to play
quote:
Unlike infielders and outfielders, catchers must throw the ball back to the pitcher frequently. Hence, catchers could throw the baseball 100 times more than infielders and outfielders throughout a game. Catchers also sometimes try to throw base runners out from their knees, which forces the arm to generate most of the force instead of the legs. Catchers who undergo UCL reconstruction should be carefully monitored once they are ready to return to play. Playing time may need to be decreased until clinicians believe the catcher is prepared for a full game. Baseball teams that utilize a designated hitter may also benefit from allowing their catcher to be designated hitter occasionally, where they will not need to throw.

Wyeth is the obvious option. He didn’t show anything last year

He is a DH only in 2022. I don’t see him catching again until 2023 if he catches again at all.

I not sure they really need to get another catcher with McManus coming in. I believe they thought all along they were only going to get one of the two catchers and recently they realized they probably weren’t getting either which is why they went get McManus.
You now have 2 experienced catcher. One an above average defensive catcher and the other an above average offensive catcher. At this stage in recruiting you aren’t getting one that can do both for 2022. I believe they need to focus on getting more arms over another catcher.
