I agree defense wins championships, but to consider Alabama’s offenses as pedestrian is laughable. Their OL has been consistently amongst the conference’s best, they had several top WRs now playing on Sundays and even Alvin Kamara couldn’t get on the field because they have been loaded at RB, one of which won a heisman. What they have proven is that you can win without a dominant QB, provided you surround him with great talent.

You need a defense, good QB and a head coach who can win the close ones

I think our D will be like 12 papg worthy. I think we'll be that good, quite possibly the best D in the country at points allowed per game. Though this will be hard to achieve with our schedule.

Yes, defense wins championships. Always has, always will.

Look at the 2016 defense. We still lost 4 games that year and only had a total of 3 tds allowed in those 4 losses. Even if the defense is that dominant, the offense still has to step up or their will be losses

Wisky - 1 td
Auburn - 0 tds
Bama - 1 td
Fla - 1td

Yes. you can improve a program by having a spread/air raid/fun n gun offense but you dont win the games that count. Spurrier won one...ONE national title. Wash st hasn't, Baylor hasn't, etc.
The most sound team up front wins. The things that won 75 years ago still win today.

Abilty to run the ball
Ability to stop the run
Sound punting game to flip FP
Be plus in the giveaway takeaway. Amazing stat I saw was the team that wins the turnover battle wins 73 percent of the time.

During the CFP, here are the total defense stats of the participants andnational Total d ranking
2014
1-Alabama
18- FSU
9-Ohio State
46 Oregon

2015
3- Alabama
26- Mich State
10 Clemson
39 Oklahoma

2016
3- Alabama
10- Clemson
9- Ohio State
31-Washington State

2017
1- Alabama
4-Clemson
6-Georgia
67-Oklahoma

Conversely, here are the total offense stats for the same CFP participants

2014
18-ALA
38-FSU
9-Ohio State
3 Oregon

2015
45-Ala
73-Mich State
11- Clemson
7-Oklahoma

2016
34- Ala
12-Clemson
31-Ohio State
32-Washington

2017
29-Ala
38-Clemson
32-UGA
1- Oklahoma

The average rank of total defense for the CFP teams has been 13
The average rank of total offense for CFP teams has been 26

Just last year, UGA with the number 6 defense defeated the number one offense. Conversely, Georgia had the number 32 offense and defeated the number 67 Oklahoma defense.

In the games that MATTER, defense still wins those.

it is best to be good at all 3 aspects: offense, defense and also (which tends to get overlooked) special teams. The better you are the more chance you have to win championships,

They did that n 2016. Didn’t win us anything. ya got to score these days. In this day and age of CFB if u hold teams to 1 TD a game ya should be in the playoffs. Period.

Anyone who has played organized football knows that the battle is won in the trenches and defense wins championships.

Yep, as long as Bama is holding us to next to nothing points every year, we'll never get over that hump.

Recruiting wins championships

You need enough talent on both sides of the ball to win

And you absolutely need elite athletes on defense

Truth. Recruiting wins championships. Especially recruiting the big hogs in the trenches. But recruiting a stud Q.B. goes along ways as well

Then they met the one team in the championship game with an even better defense than their own, and now you know the rest of the story.

The defense played their arse off all game. They could only do so much without an offense sustaining drives or flipping the field.
