The scheme called for the ends to play contain and rarely rush the passer.
I hear you, but great coaches adjust their scheme to the strengths of their players.

Having a beast like Hunter and not using him properly is malpractice.

He was underdeveloped and did not get enough playing time.

Underdeveloped, yes. Didn't play enough, no.

He started his soph and junior years and rarely came off the field as we weren't as deep at DE. In 2014 he set a record for total tackles for an LSU D-Lineman.

Chavis just didn't really emphasize the DEs rushing the passer as much as he could have. Something I found odd considering how much he featured Leonard Little at Tenner.

That said, Hunter took over Sam Montgomery's position and Sam had like 8+ sacks his last 2 years. It was weird to me that Hunter couldn't get closer to that with the amount of snaps he played.

Chavis didn’t turn him loose. Played disciple on the end and not up the field. As a result he didn’t have the sack stats, despite the talent. The NFL allowed him to play free , utilizing his talents to rush the passer.

More like Brick Haley. Vikings commented how little he knew after OTA’s. They knew they stole one.

While the scheme didn't help, he needed more instruction here on how to beat offensive lineman.

Vikings showing patience with pass-rushing prodigy Danielle Hunter
quote:

"As soon as we drafted him, I made a cut-up of every single rush he had at LSU," the Vikings' defensive line coach said. "I had him come to my office, and I said, 'I want you to explain to me what you were being taught to do.' So we're sitting there, and he's explaining to me how they were teaching him to rush. Well, you run [a 40-yard dash in] 4.5 [seconds]. But you take off on the snap of the ball, and you run wide. Now, the offensive tackle just kicks back and waits on you. You might as well be running 4.9, 5-flat. And number two, I don't think he was exposed to how the offensive lineman was trying to pass protect against him. He was just out there, using his athleticism and trying to make something happen. The first thing I wanted to do was find out what he knew and why I was seeing what I was seeing."

If he chases a few more seasons and keeps playing at this level, he will be in the HoF.

I think one more year he is already a hof er.

He is well respected in the league.

He may have a chance already

Hunter still has a lot of gas in the tank and playing opposite Will Anderson is a pretty good gig. Even as he ages, he will be able to help a team as a situational rusher. His career arc is right on line with John Abraham, who had 11.5 sacks in his 14th season. 25 more sacks puts him in the top 10 in career sacks.

No, because we were all mystified by his lack of production here. You can't predict a HoF career, but most people expected he'd do well.

Russell Gage is probably the answer here. Nobody expected him to do much of anything, and he ended up starting about 30 games

No. He was a freak in college who got totally misused and didn’t see as much playing time as he should have.

The expectations in the NFL were correct. The production in college was what was head scratching

For this kid to be a starting LB on one of the best teams in NFL is just crazy, seeing as had tough time seeing the field at LSU and certainly was not a star..
He has to be in the running for biggest overachiever.
A couple of receivers who were not first teamers at LSU also have had a nice career in the NFL......playing by superstars was the most likely scenario on that, I guess.

When he was drafted the viking staff was raving about him as just a physical specimen with no pass rush moves.

Probably a good selection. I know it's not NFL, but Garret Temple having the NBA career he did still blows my mind.

As good as he is, he has only had 2 seasons with 15 or more sacks 10 seasons. Thats going to be hard to accomplish starting to get into his 30s.
