quote:So basically in year 3 of McMahon we needed enough money to buy a minimum of 4 starters in the portal? And since we only got 3 and had an injury we can’t expect to even be competitive?
Basketball has almost no $$ to compete for players in the portal. We brought in 3 senior guards but no big guys.

Yea I don’t see this at all idc how well he answers questions. “X’s & O’s” coaches destroy 100% of the less talented teams they play, beat 90% of the equally talented teams & get an upset or 2 every year while keeping games close. McMahon, the opposite. Consistent double digits loses against ranked teams, complete toss-up against equal talent & allows FCS schools to stay in the game until the 2nd half. Too many games that should’ve been over by halftime resulted in 100-post threads started by overreacting fans because we’re down 3 at half against the 5th ranked team in the fricking Big Sky.
Half of the fan base thinks he’s some kind of basketball savant who can’t construct a roster. The other half thinks he’s bringing in great talent but can’t coach them. I think he’s bringing in mostly mediocre players that aren’t talented enough to compensate for his inability to out-coach the opponent by a wide enough margin to win a game on a consistent basis. He’s simply a mid coach in an insanely competitive conference. Basketball version of Mark Stoops.

As I pointed out in another thread earlier we have out-recruited most of the conference under McMahon. We have had significantly better recruiting classes than Florida, Mississippi State and A&M and we are not remotely close to being on their level.

Exactly… I really don’t know how posters come to the conclusion our recruiting is bad.. it’s not. It’s the one area McMahon has been doing well in.
The narrative we don’t have the $ is flat out wrong. I’ve talked about flipping VJ and Curtis here ad nauseum.
It might not be as much as the top schools, but it’s certainly not as low as the bottom feeders. Other schools do more with less.

This is the cousin of "the program that couldn't win shite with Shaq and Chris Jackson". Thanks Daddy Dale.

I honestly think LSU just doesn’t give enough of a shite about the basketball program to spend the money it takes to hire a legit basketball coach. Wade is the closest thing to legit LSU has had for a basketball coach in over 30 years or more. And even Wade isn’t near level of a Bill Self, Tom Izzo, Coach K, Roy Williams or Jay Wright.

Wonder if in an NIL world Johnny O'Bryant comes back and we have a team with Jordan Mickey, Jarrell Martin, and Johnny O

I like McMahon a lot too but he is proving that this is too big of a job for him. Morant fell into his lap… it’s not like McMahon turned him into the player he’s become.

What this shows is that being a high iq, x and o guy isnt the key to success in CBB. By all accounts, McMahon is the most cerebral coach in the conference. Reporters who have interviewed him are unanimous in their impression that he exudes strategy and tactic. He’s a master of the game, just not a master at roster construction
I mentioned something similar in another thread, but I disagree slightly with you.
I think he understands the basic tenants of basketball, and can talk about the game at a high level. But his teams lack identity, physical toughness, and don’t play defense with a passion or purpose.
I just don’t think he has the components of his personality that are required to be a great-elite college basketball coach…that’s not going to change.

We have 1 contributor on this team right now from his first 2 recruiting classes, that's Corey Chest....who I would say is playing about to his ranking of just outside the Top 100. He is a flawed player but he is good at what he's good at (Rebounding/defense).
Mike Williams has disappeared. Reed is hurt, out for season. Ward quit the team. The 2 other guys from his first class have both transferred out.
This team is freshmen and transfers at this point. So the recruiting angle is kind of null and void for the most part. The only guys he recruited that are playing right now are true freshmen of which nobody really looks that ready if we're being honest and then the transfers, which for the most part, these are not SEC starter caliber players.
The most glaring weakness is he never went out and got a PG for this team. Sears is a short scoring guard, horrible ball handler. Cam Carter is a scoring guard. Givens is still just trying to figure everything out as a freshman.
There's nobody on this team that can run an offense.

I’ll be the first to admit that basketball only serves to bridge football and baseball for me. But I thought and hoped McMahon would be the guy. Let this season play out, but the first two SEC games are a touch alarming.
