If you think this game is on Blake Baker, you are clueless

... but who is surprised by that?

LSU had 8 trips - EIGHT TRIPS - inside field goal range and scored 13 points. Special teams spotted Bama two red zones, in which they scored TDs.

7 of Bama's 12 drives went for 5 PLAYS OR LESS. On SEVEN drives, Bama literally did nothing. The defense was actually dominant for most of the game, except a handful of plays

This game is 95% on the offensive staff, offensive execution, and special teams.

Yes the offense looks like Les Miles offense when they are in the red zone.

I think this team has really good players (and will continue to under Kiffin), they just don't have the "do what it takes to win" attitude yet and they suffer from year 1 bugs. It's the little things that are preventing this team from playing up to their potential - and those things happen in year 1 when you have 90% new personnel on offense and 100% new coaching staff on offense.

The future of this program is extremely bright, imo.

Except for that 1 drive after we went up 13-10

He's not the sole reason we lost but he's a constant problem of never being able to rely on his defense in key moments in games. Why do you think Kiffin gambles now so much? Kentucky broke him. He knows he can't rely on his DC.

How many times does Baker's defense have to fold in key moments in 3 years for anyone to realize he's the most unclutch DC ever? While he may not have been the main reason he sure helped them on their domination in the 4th quarter.

LSU takes lead near end of 3rd and like clockwork, you have all the momentum, stadium on fire, and Baker defense gives up a 5 play scoring drive that effectively ended the game right there. Momentum swings is massive in the college game. I'm sorry but I hope Baker leaves after this season. Not saying fire him but him get a HC job somewhere else. I'm tired of seeing this.

His defenses are good until they're asked to get you key stops.

Are you serious? Sure you aren't watching LSU golf or something?

Have you not heard all year long people asking why Kiffin isn't going for it on 4th down as much? He doesn't go for 4th downs as much because he DOES trust the defense.

LSU is top 20 nationally in scoring defense. #1 in SEC in yds/game. #4 in SEC in scoring.

You're an idiot.

Blake gets some of the blame, but not as much as our red zone offense.

It’s really pretty simple, we still have a terrible o line, and once the field shrinks we cannot run the ball. That is the whole issue. If Sam had all day to throw he would look superior. If big holes were produced, any back would look superior. We were one dimensional. Period.

The defense allowed 20 pts in regulation to Kentucky. That should’ve been enough to win the game.

Sam Leavitt is just not good in big moments or games.

Red zone offense has been an issue all season. A better conversion rate wins the UK game as well. It was a problem with the old staff too.

The failure to get better IOL is a huge factor and that lies with Kiffin, his 2 OL coaches and Billy Glasscock. I expect this to be addressed in the offseason. Better OG play and we're undefeated or a 1 loss team right now.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Someone who looks at statistics but doesn't watch the games. Like I said above, Baker is not the main reason they lost yesterday, but he contributed heavily to it in the 4th. He was the reason they lost Kentucky and Ole Miss game alongside countless others the past 3 years against big opponents. It's not a 1 off thing, it's a constant.

You're calling me an idiot? Since you love stats so much LSU's offense is one of the best in the country and the SEC. They outgained Bama yesterday but couldn't finish drives. In key moments if you can't rely on your defense what value do they bring outside gaudy stats outside when it matters the most?

I think Aranda is an excellent example of a DC who at times looked like Bama's D yesterday bend but don't break but how many times did anyone in the back of their head think "Aranda's defense isn't going to get a stop here" ? Very rarely. Offense is going to sputter at some point or have games like yesterday. There's simply no excusing Baker's defenses in 4th quarter of games or 2 minute defenses.

This is not a once, twice, or three time thing. It's an every big game issue and at that point it's a chronic problem.

The interception was bad.

A few times he escaped pressure to not throw the balll away

Hopefully both can be fixed.

My issue with defense is safety play. Benefield has been awesome but Cooley and others have struggled

Dude, are we talking about the same program? I'm talking about LSU football. Or do you just have extreme recency bias?

LSU fans couldn't wait for Aranda to leave. And that was after the 2019 season. Aranda's defenses got worse each year he was here. Baker's defenses have gotten better each year he's been here.

Aranda's 2016 defense was pretty good. The rest of his years here were objectively worse than the defense we have now.

Stop trying to remember Aranda's defense, because you're doing awful at that. Go look it up.

Red zone offense lost this one, but I’ve never see a more average DC get pampered the way Baker does. Hope he takes a HC job this spring.

On the long pass play for Bama on their possession after LSU went ahead, it looked like Cooley was beat in coverage, but I don't know if he was making up for someone else's bust. I did see him stand and watch as a Bama RB drug defenders for another 2-3 yards inside the 5 late in the game. That play pissed me off.

If you look at many of the top match ups, you will see both teams scoring points like 20-30 in some games. That does not mean the losing team's defense broke down. Its part of the game, and Baker's teams do a great job against great offenses. Look at the Miami defense the last 2 games, the won against NC who scored more than 20 points and lost to ND who scored more than 30 points. Yet, all year folks were calling their defense elite. The same thing exists in more of these games. So, Baker's defense giving up a big play or two against a really good offense is not a big breakdown. Its part of the same.
Bama beat us by putting up less offense than we did. And to the point of the original post, we had so many more opportunities. Yet, it wasn't great Bama defense that stopped us...we sh*t the bed on our own opportunities,

Against a pretty bad red zone defense. Kiffin out coached himself last night.

We have to implement some new to us looks and formations just for the red zone. Everyone is playing the slants, drags underneath and direct snap to D. Jones. Hell the one td we scored they lined up in I formation and ran a toss sweep with grace at fullback. We haven't done that this year and it worked.

I don’t think he out coached himself, it’s not like we got extra cuts in the RZ or anything. The OL struggles are just amplified in short yardage/ RZ offense. In fact you can kind of commend the offensive staff for being able to have such an effective offense with the unit being so meh to bad.

Overall Leavitt played well, the interception was bad but taking some of the sacks he did when he didn’t have to was the bigger problem

Not saying it was on Baker. The offense and Lane’s bad decisions lost the game.

But Baker’s defense consistently gives up big scoring drives at critical points in these big games.

It’s like clockwork.

When Bama scored immediately after we took the lead, you just knew we were done.
