definitely
SFP, this argument gets self-defeating. USC hasn't lost to a team with more talent during the entire Pete Carroll era. So he can't possibly be a great coach losing (I'll spot him the first year) 9 games in 7 years, including losses to Stanford (at home), Oregon State, UCLA and others.

off topic slightly, but I would love to hear you explain how Jack Del Rio is a "great" coach under the same restrictions you laid out for Miles.
(I am operating under the assumption you think Del Rio is a great coach and/or would be good for LSU)

2005 was a great job, I'll give you that. However, 2006, 2007, and 2008 were all filled with poor coaching, so that's why I don't like the guy.
You guys nit pick like a bunch of grannies. The year he won the NC was a bad coaching year? Give me a break! 5x on 4th downs to beat florida a bad coaching decision? having the balls to throw that pass against Auburn (where, by the way, we still would have had 3 ticks left on the clock if Byrd played like he did this year and dropped the ball).
Take your granny panties off and be a man!
By the way, Saban doesn't have a lot of scholarship seniors on the roster because he kicked a TON of kids off the team this year. That's real integrity right there. Giving kids the opportunity to get a college education and then taking it away because you didn't recruit them.

tell me what he's done to earn this title
I've never been a big fan of Les Miles...He belongs in the Big 10, where he knows how to pronounce the names of the schools..."Ar-Kansas", how fricking goofy & embarrassing was that? Also, as you mentioned, he was incredibly lucky last year, and we saw what he's really like as a coach this year with his own recruits.

Nick Saban was smart enough to win with a running game and a good defense
So, what happened in 2002 and 2004?

This is the 7,987th time this question or one similar to it has been posed. We're into Guinness World Record territory here.

2006 and 2007 ? Wow. We have some dumb "fans".

I don't know anyone in college football I would consider a "great coach".
But,what he did guiding his new team threw the 2005 hurricane season,a #3 finish in 2006 and a National Title in 2007 is pretty damn good. I don't know why that has to be explained.

This is 100% correct (except for the spelling of "through"). 34-6 from 2005-2007 with an NC: how could this not qualify as "great"?

These same idiots that are bowing down to the Great Saban are the same ones who justly criticized him when he coached poorly here (2002 and 2004). Now that he isn't here, he is elevated to god-like status. He can do no wrong. They will never give Miles any credit for anything unless he leaves. These are the same types of idiot fans who got Coach Mac run out of a job after only being the most successful coach in school history. Looking back, I'm sure you can see how that worked out. It's never a good thing for a program when the fans get too greedy.

miles' 4th year was horrible...everyone including les better hope true freshman russell shepard can be tebow-esque next season, even though tebow was not that much of a factor as a true freshman.
the defense will have to make a complete turn around from last season..that's a lot to ask from a new dc, especially if the talent on defense was overrated.

I don't yet consider Miles a great coach and haven't read through everything but here are some specific acts/accomplishments:
1. Retaining Jimbo Fisher - I was not a huge fan of Fisher's but keeping Jimbo in place probably gave us our best chance to keep some continuity with JR developing as a QB.
2. Hiring Gary Crowton - we lost significant offensive talent and then had the best offense in school history.
3. kicking Ryan Perrilloux off the team. It virtually ensured that we would take some lumps this season - even before we knew that our defense was poor - but it showed integrity and will serve the program well in the long run.
4. Gotta give some credit for the 4th down calls against UF and the fake kick against SC-East.
5. This year's recruting class.

It is coach Miles' greatness that makes him great.

What coach in the nation would have had LSU in a BCS game this year, or even say, a 9-3 record, with the QB play they had this year. NO one. Stop bitching and crying over one bad year, and look at what hes done for you. Yall will be better in the future, stop being a little bitch and get over it.
Thank you. I totally agree. There is nothing worse then people used to being on top that cant handle a little hard times. BAD SEASONS HAPPEN
