Loudest game I remember..we got jacked by the refs

I was a 22 year old junior. I was at that game. I remember the student section chanting “We are proud of you” to our Tigers as they left the filed.

Re the ticket demand, driving across the Basin hrs before the game, cars after cars passed by with people holding signs outside the windows, most with the $ sign & the word tickets. Never saw that again, before or afterwards. That USC team had 5-6-7 first round draft choices .Post game, their All American OL said "this game makes playing N.Dame in S,Bend seem like Romper Room. This was insane". Marcus Allen: " as we passed, like inches away, that Tiger in his cage by our tunnel, they goosed him & he almost came through his cage. Most of our players had never seen a Tiger before & a few came close to pissing their pants". Post game, no one was leaving the stadium & "LSU LSU LSU" was rocking T.S.

Freshman year. Second ever LSU game.
ELECTRIC. Student section stood the entire game.
Still one of the best atmosphere's I have ever experienced.

I was at the game.
Charley Mac was still saying on his deathbed that it was a bogus call and I agree with him. And a false start on USC was not called.
The atmosphere was incredible.
I rank that as the greatest game in the history of Tiger Stadium that we lost.

It was my first LSU game. I was 10 years old working as a Boy Scout usher in the old nosebleed section. Been hooked ever since.

Same here. My very first LSU game.

Every post above is accurate. I'd been to the soaking wet 3-0 game against Alabama with my future (and still) wife. She kept asking if we could leave. We stayed until the end. But that game was nothing compared to the USC game. Was at that game with a different girl (still unmarried then), but barely said a word to her. No one above has exaggerated about the atmosphere. The Tigers fought tooth and nail. Hardest hitting game I have ever attended. The tigers never quit. Deafening the entire game. The screaming might have paused momentarily, but my ears were ringing so much I couldn't tell. Refs blew the call; nothing you can do except let them know. And boy did that stadium let them know.
Quote from Greatest Game From Every Season:1979:

Ronnie Lott called the scene one of the greatest of his career, “Every one of us left that night saying ‘that was a game, ‘ but I still think about it that way. I haven’t been in an event like that at any level of football. Out of all the games I’ve ever played in, I’ve never been in anything like that, and I am including my Super Bowls in that assessment.”

I worked at Wendy's on Causeway in 1978 - Mardi Gras Day 1979. Were you working there then? Who are you?

The most memorable sporting event I’ve ever attended. Junior year in the student section, and it was Tiger Stadium at its best.Tigers went blow for blow with one of the most talented teams ever and still had two shots in the end zone to win. I’m going to Las Vegas and still looking for more revenge after 45 years.

Unfortunately I did not go, I was in junior high and my Dad would take me to some games but not all, I did however listen on the radio and my Dad told me about it.
The sustained noise was like nothing he'd ever experienced. My Dad got season tickets in 1958 and until the day he died in 2009 and I still sit in those same seats today.
He said and I agree as you could tell just listening on the radio - loudest game ever in TS. Un-matched in my opinion. Ask any of the USC players that played in the game, and I can assure you they remember it.
A crowd these days cheers sporadically, then checks their phones. The roar was constant that night.

Went to the game at 19 years old. Had 2 tickets and was offered 200 dollars apiece but turned em down. That was a lot of money back in those days, especially for a college student. Took a teammate of mine from Texas to the game and it was an incredible night. The phantom face mask called on Benjy T was bullshite. My Texas friend still talks about his one and only Tiger Stadium experience was the greatest game he has ever seen in person. He has chosen to not go back to Tiger Stadium since he thinks the USC 79 game was incomparable.

[quote] Never felt that feeling after watching any other game after that. Glad I was there.[/quot
100% same here
It was just different prior to and during the game. Probably will never be replicated and that’s saying a lot when it comes to Tiger stadium.

It's just different the Tiger Stadium experience then and now.
One example - the pre-game salute by the band walking out to start pre-game. The roar used to be a sustained one that continued until the crescendo when the LSU was formed and they marched to the tunnel.
These days it peters out once the four sections of the field are saluted. It always disappoints me a bit because I remember it being so much better.

“It’s not like I held on and his head got jerked to the ground,” Thibodeaux said. “It was going to be fourth down. I was sitting there in stunned silence as to what was going to happen. We had a great opportunity to close out the game perhaps. There was a feeling, ‘Oh, they’re going to do this to us.’ We could have still won the game. It was like, ‘Damn, let’s keep playing’.”

He said he brushed his facemask. It was enough to cause McDonald's head to move slightly. That's what the ref saw. McDonald said it was fortunate and he was surprised they called it. But it wasn't totally like he didn't touch him.
