I think we're seeing the makings of a guy about to retire

I like CPM, always have. But the way he's carried himself this year and the way he's acted all year, seems like he'll retire after the season.

I would bank on it having a lot to do with his dad passing. He lost his biggest advisor and probably the person who pushed him the most - that can kill any will to win.

ETA: I'd much rather see him retire than fired. Because he's earned that.

2019 is the farewell tour. Thanks Coach for the memories. Wishing you the best in retirement.

I hope this is the case. I don't want to see the guy fired, he has done the program some good in the years he has been here.

Same here, but it is on him. Does he have the grace to bow out?

I came to couple games last month CPM looked like tired broken down little old man. My wife thought he was 80.

It's very possible the man hasn't been able to greave the loss of his father yet. That can take a lot out of a person.

He's never going to leave on his own accord. He's become Les Miles living on past accolades, and not accountable to anyone.

Paul was already losing some steam, but the death of his farher has literally sucked the life out of him.

He’s paid too much $ to walk away imo. I think he gets one more year to right the ship.

If I’m Woodward I “encourage” him to bring in a real hitting coach. I think oppposing coaches have a great feel for how Dunn calls games now, but I think he’s back next year.

Maybe something happened in his personal life around that time that would affect most people in a way that makes them seem tired and broken down?

I wonder what though?

If PM can't deal with the death of a 90 year old man, then he needs to step away from the team, and take a job in the Ath Dept. He's doing a disservice to the team if he's not prepared to do his job.

I don't think his demeanor is due to wanting to retire. I think his demeanor is because he's still struggling from his dad's death. I think the retiring will be a result of that, instead.

But, I actually hope he doesn't and has a bounce back year, instead.

He's 61 (not young, but not terribly old either) and he has another 5 years left on his contract. Perhaps this season has sucked a bit of life out of him, but I can't see him going anywhere for at least another 1 or 2.

Paul doesn't seem like the kind of guy to walk away from his money. It's not like he's been making millions his whole life. Until LSU he was making 148,666 so I doubt he would pass up another year of 1.225 million. Can't say I blame him.

Your point? I feel for the guy personally, but there is still a job to be done.

I don't pretend to know how all this works, but I'd assume they could negotiate a severance. Treat him right on the way out.

It's not like his dad tragically died. Of course it sucks no matter how old your dad is when he dies, but it's not like this was some huge surprise that a 90 year old man died.

Its about the way it was said, not the message. "If he can't deal with the death of a 90 year old man..." Thats dehumanizing his dad's passing. Its still his dad. Most people take time off after the death of a loved one. CPM didn't. He was right back in the dugout the very next day. You could tel it was still weighing on him. I don't think he's had time to come to grips, yet.
