re: I think we're seeing the makings of a guy about to retire

If PM can't deal with the death of a 90 year old man, then he needs to step away from the team, and take a job in the Ath Dept. He's doing a disservice to the team if he's not prepared to do his job.
Thats a dick comment to make.

Your point? I feel for the guy personally, but there is still a job to be done.
I said nothing about the job that needs to be done or how he's done it.
The person just commented that he looked tired and broken down.

THe poster responded to the OP, so I thought it was clear he was making his statement based on that fact

He lost his biggest advisor and probably the person who pushed him the most - that can kill any will to win.
why does a grown arse man border lining retirement need someone to push them to win?

Marinara fricking lucky he had his dad that long. Mine died when I was 12. I got over it, so should he. Never have liked the guy/coach even when he was winning championships.

I tend to agree, all of the signs are there.

Based on this post, your dad saw the writing on the wall and bounced early to get away from you.

I hate to hear you lost your dad at that age. That must be very tough to get over.
However, I would imagine you weren't "over it" within two months... right?
Also, when you have a dad for as long as CPM did and that dad is your main career adviser, it hurts when he's gone - a lot.
It's kind of callous to say "get over it" two months later.

Its about the way it was said, not the message. "If he can't deal with the death of a 90 year old man..." Thats dehumanizing his dad's passing. Its still his dad. Most people take time off after the death of a loved one. CPM didn't. He was right back in the dugout the very next day. You could tel it was still weighing on him. I don't think he's had time to come to grips, yet.
People at all levels of sports have dealt with death and kept playing.
Isiah Thomas sister died the day before the playoffs started. He lead his Celtics team to the conference finals.
Using his dad's death as an excuse for the teams performance, or his coaching this year is a sorry excuse. Life goes on. I understand everyone deals with the grieving process different, but as i said, this was a 90 year old man. This wasn't some huge surprise.
If this was his kid, i'd completely understand not being able to focus and do his job. but your 90 year old dad? gotta move on man. He should feel lucky and honored that he got to be with his dad for as long as he did.

Speak for yourself, a-hole! I lost my 95 year old dad a little over a year ago and it is still difficult at times. He was my best friend and his brain was as sharp as ever until the end. Of course, we carry on with our lives, jobs, etc. but don't say it makes a difference just because someone is older!

He's 61 (not young, but not terribly old either) and he has another 5 years left on his contract. Perhaps this season has sucked a bit of life out of him, but I can't see him going anywhere for at least another 1 or 2.
Paul is an old 61. He just has this look now like he's in another world.

I understand he was close to his father.
But CPM is 61 years old and this is his 37th season as a HC. He's been a coach longer than most rantards have been alive.
This idea that he's so sad, he can't coach, is pretty insulting if you ask me.
This team is dealing with a lot of injuries, and has a lot of players that just have not stepped up. This team has absolutely ZERO player leadership.
CPM has never been a get in your face, grab someone by the jersey coach. I think he depends on some of his players to motivate and "inspire" the others, fire them up, etc. No one on this team is doing that.
I think he is truly lost as to how to handle this team and the challenges that have been placed before him.
This isn't football, where one coach can outscheme the other. Where one coach can introduce new wrinkles that the other coach wasn't prepared for.
This is baseball. You throw the ball over the plate and someone tries to hit it. You try to run the bases and score. That's all it is.
Coach shouldn't have to motivate the players. The players are old enough to have some pride. What you saw last night was a pathetic lack of effort on the players.
I'm ok with losing. I'm ok with having crappy players. I'm not ok with the lack of effort.
We are 14-10 in the SEC. If we were 4-20, then I would say, we just suck, such is life. But for a team to be 14-10 in the SEC and come out that flat last night speaks to a lack of personal resolve on the field.

He's not retiring. This season is not on the coach. Plus, his team is stacked for next year, coaches don't leave normally situations like that.

Does he have the grace to bow out?
Miles didn't....some coaches just can't admit they've slipped.
