They dont have to be great, because i fully expect the offense to score 30+ most games, they just need to make it hard on the opposing offenses. If someone gets beat because the QB threw a great ball and a receiver made a good catch then so be it, but at least you made the offense make a play. No more guys running free down the seams or getting gashed on the ground because no one adjusted to an unbalanced line.

Is the D-line going to play on the line of scrimmage? If so, we are already better than last year.

I expect a lot of improvement in terms of scheming, play calling and execution, but we are thin. Our margin of error with injuries is slim. Baker will have to be selective with aggressive play calls. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a lot of bend but don’t break defensive game plans. Save aggressive blitzes for the red zone and 3rd downs.

This is possible. Baker might take the aggressive route and try to get off the field ASAP. Which is ideal.

No. We're not. At all. This is the worst DT room we've had since the 90's and the DB room isn't much better. Baker isn't a miracle worker.

I'm not against a bend don't break defense, but when you are getting scored on nearly every drive, you better swap to a boom or bust defense to atlest give yourself a chance.

The talent just isn’t there to be top 25 defense.

We do have an upgrade in coaching. My hopes is we see a higher level of fundamental play and discipline. I’d be really excited if our back 7 got bigger in their britches. Some of the freshmen have an opportunity to shine and if they become impact players it may take up for lack of talent across the position groups. If one of the DL can be disruptive on every play then Perkins can eat. Same goes for the DBs, we just need one lockdown corner to take the pressure off the position group.

With such a high level of turnover on offense the defense really needs to step up this year. All game time pressure is on the Defense this year.

I would be happy to see the defense be good at 1 thing. Whether thats run d, pass D, rushing the QB, or forcing TO's or 3rd Down/Redzone defense. Being good at 1 thing and slight improvement across the other aspects then we are very competitive team.

Unlikely we will move to a top 15 defense but top 50? That should be achievable.

- We were #108 in yds/gm last year
- We were #109 in yds per play
- We were #114 in 3rd down defense
- We were #109 in Redzone defense
- We were tied for #65 in interceptions
- We were #85 in Rushing Defense
- We were #103 in Turnovers
- We were #115 in pass Defense

So bring all those to top 50 and top 15/20 in 1 Category and we should be a very competitive team.

I think we will be better, but that is a low bar.
Nor do i think practicing against this OL will improve the DL significantly. Our DL practiced against them all last year.and they were awful.
I think we have a better DL because of coaching and scheme, but the talent / experience for significant improvement is not there..
Yet...

According to the videos on YouTube of the new NCAA Football game our D is going to be so so.

Shouldn't we go by that???

I'm joking here!!

An average LSU defense is a major improvement over last season which was in the running for the worst LSU defense in decades.

Tackling

That's the one thing I'm looking for us to improve at the most. So many times we're ending drives last year if we could just tackle.

The word I use is "communication". For whatever reason, there was a disconnect between coaches and players last year, and you saw the results.

Baker is an excellent communicator. He's going to make sure every player is confident before they step on the field.

Without a doubt, the weakest link on the team last year was having no D-line coach from early in fall camp thru the entire season. This year, the problem is talent and depth on the D-line.

Its a simple concept. Getting consistent pressure with a 4 man rush and not getting gouged in the running game will result in a 2-3 game swing in our record. Especially since it is highly unlikely we will have the best offense in college football again.

I really don't care about overall performance.
As long as Major Burns can flex and taunt after making a tackle 15 yards downfield, I am good...

With today’s modern offenses that is actually a decent objective at least for the major games anyway.

I would wager that would improve our 3rd down defense if we could tackle better. But coverage busts is also a major problem that resulted in huge plays.
