I loved the move of Benefield to star when spears went down

I think moving Benefield to star gets your two best pure cover safeties patrolling the deep part of the field in Cooley and Jhase Thomas. Benefield is at his best wrecking the LOS and flying around in the box similar to a Jamal Adams. He can also be used as a deep safety when needed but someone like Jhase Thomas is a much more natural fit at deep safety.
Thomas’s emergence allowed us to move Benefield to take over Spears’s spot. It’s crazy to see how good of a spot we are at safety in terms of depth compared to where we were just 2 years ago when we had guys like sage ryan, jardin gilbet and major burns starting in that spot.

He totally fits the position especially with his coaching on the field. I see it every single down. Constant communication and leadership.

It was a good move, but also kind of a no-brainer after the way Thomas played against Ole Miss. Benefield is really fricking good. This Benefield/Cooley/Thomas combo is not a big drop off from the Spears/Bemefield/Cooley one. But Lord help us if Benefield goes down. Or Cooley. Their experience is crucial.

Benefield was getting held all over the field against A&M too. Which means he was beating guys constantly.
