I know some are trashing Blake Baker but I have to give him a moral victory of sorts

He's went on the road twice to face Trinidad Chambliss/Kewan Lacy and given up 24 and 32 points respectively.
Kirby has faced them once at home and once at a neutral site, and gave up 35 and 39 points respectively.
Venables faced them once at home and gave up 34 points.
Even in their loss vs Miami at a neutral site last year, they still scored 27 points.

The defense wasn’t as bad as people are making out to be, however his gameplan of playing 5-10 yards off made me want to pull my hair out.

What game has his defense looked elite vs a good QB/offense/mobile threat? Legit question. I can name a bunch of games the defense looked below average (putting it nicely). Vandy atm bama etc. it’s fair to criticize Baker at this point. He has yet to prove he can do anything against legit QBs or mobile threats. Fair to criticize him until proven otherwise. Leavitt was the main reason we lost but the defense didn’t play amazing. If anything, this enforced the view that he’s overrated

Trinidad lit up Venables and Kirby both on the road last year. Baker wasn’t great, but wasn’t bad either imo. There’s no gameplan to stop Trinidad or those guys would have found it

He's held Chambliss to less points on the road, than most have at neutral sites/home. That's certainly something.
I'm interested to see how they fare vs Reed on Saturday.

The D gave up 60% on 3rd down to a team converting at a 35% rate vs charlotte and Louisville. We gave up 420+ yards when we’re supposed to be elite and the strength of the team. Gave up a score with under 2 minutes to play in the first half and OM had to go 75 yards. Gave up a 92 yard scoring drive and couldn’t stop them at the end because we backed off again after pressure and man D got us back into the game. Offense converted 53% we came into the game converting 54% and ran for almost 200 yards. QB scored 2 of our 3 TDs running and passing, didn’t turn it over until the final play on a tipped ball.

The strategy in the first half was not good but I liked the adjustments made in the locker room.

Baker is a good not great college defensive coordinator. There probably aren’t any great ones in the game right now though.
