The fact is that LSU had better defensive personnel last year than this. Kelly had nothing to do with that. Next year should begin to reflect his his influence on the defense.

So you're saying of those "39 scholarship players" Coach O left behind are better than what BK has brought in? It seems to me we should have been better on defense this season and have not been. This defense has regressed and that is COACHING. People like to bring up the 39 player excuse but rave on "winning the west" but give him a pass and use 39 players as an excuse...you cant have it both ways...2 years of the same system/coaches and MORE of BK's players...the math aint mathin'

Then let me help you:
22D
Gaye, Roy, BJ, Baskerville, Ward- O’s guys that are now gone
Burns, Penn O guys that remained
Bernard-Converse, Garner BK’s guys that are gone
Perkins, Mingo (injured), Brooks(ill) all remained

Out of our primary 12 defensive players, 7 were O’s recruits. BK got five new guys, but two left and only one (Perkins) is healthy and is now playing.

Against Ga. State we started these guys:
Penn, Burns, Smith, Jones and Ryan that were O’s recruits.
Speights, Jefferson, Oghoufo, Sam were BK guys who transferred in.
Perkins, Stamps were BK recruits who signed out of HS

We started 5 O guys and 6 BK guys.

It’s obvious that Orgeron left the defense short on talent and numbers. The 20 and 21 classes provided BK with little defensive help.

Now it’s also obvious that BK’s evaluation of transfers was better in 22 than in 23. It also seems as if his 22 class didn’t bring in many HS bluechippers on defense because Perkins is the only one playing on D.

We are forced to play too many transfers, the older Orgeron guys are not difference makers at their positions, and BK’s recruiting hasn’t been all that good.

There’s no question that the new staff hadn’t done a good job rebuilding our D, but it is s true rebuild. That’s obvious. We need to coach up what we have, but we must recruit better and until we do we will flounder.

Go look at O’s last two classes and it was loaded with guys that were rated high, but didn’t play up to their ratings. Many of them were out of state guys that played defense and we were excited to get them.
You just proved my point... O was a master recruiter but had checked out on the coaching part...BK has had 2 years of bringing in "his" guys and our defense has gotten progressively worse

But we've looked like shite all season so it's not like having to play freshmen at CB now suddenly forced us to change scheme the past 2 games.

This is 100% NOT a defense of House…but yes we have changed the scheme. They took it down to the bare bones during the bye week after losing Alexander and with Harris out for good.

House’s scheme is over-complicated and that’s part of the reason he’s been so resistant to putting young players in for more than spot minutes, even if they have talent. I will not miss that at all when he’s gone. But with half the secondary true freshmen and the rest not exactly playing well either, they have cut the defense down to nothing but basic zone and man looks with little movement and disguising and only occasional blitzes.

There was 1 barely salvaged class that was mostly impact offensive players, 1 full class and a whole lot of portal guys plugging gaps. We haven’t gotten a full roster of “Kelly’s guys” on defense yet.

O’s last two classes should be the backbone of this team? Where are they now? Who are the impact players? The leaders? Your defensive leaders going into this season? Two Kelly transfers- Brooks and Wingo.

The staff went heavy on the portal two straight years for a reason, dumbass. O’s shitty coaching, program management, AND recruiting on his way down is the reason the defensive roster is where it is today.

You have to consider evaluating talent a vital part of recruiting. If you don’t you are making a mistake. The same thing applies to the portal. Signing stars and numbers don’t gusrdntef success.

O signed guys who looked good on a list, but way too many weren’t good players. You can’t survive doing that.

Has anyone taken the time to break down the roster
-Who was here from the 39
-Who transferred in
-Who was recruited

No it does not prove your point, it actually proves that O's and his staff's talent evaluations were spotty at best and awful at worst in regards to the 2020 and 2021 defensive recruiting classes. The defensive mis-evaluations during this period have now flamed out at LSU and provided little at other colleges as they moved on. Even Ricks was a bust at Bama.

Ok, who do you want as HC?

There are clear upgrades to be had at DC. Kelly gets one more shot to fix that side of the ball.

I really dont see anyone i’d prefer to have as a HC at this point in time.

Clean, simple and concise, bravo. Not sure the poster you responded to will understand the premise unfortunately.

LSU lost their 5 starters at DB including their team captain who called the plays.
They lost their dline coach right before the season.
In my 50+ years of watching LSU football. I’m never seen anything remotely close to that. So while I blame house for a lot of things, the lack of depth was the most glaring. Frankly, these freshmen were not supposed to be playing significant roles this year. The biggest issue is they’ve gotten out of base defense and the freshman can’t play zone or other types of defense due to communication issues

Don’t care. 2019 was so glorious that LSU can suck at defense for e0 years and it won’t matter.

I’ll take a few bad years to live 2019.

Of course he is. Kelly and house are blameless in replacing Baskerville, Ojalari and Gaye.

Georgia State marched down the field and scored on their opening drive.

As do a lot of scrub teams when matched against bluebloods. But then they typically go on to lose like 56-14, or something.

BTW, a “competent” coaching staff would also have a mediocre offense in year two.

well typically those young guys are surrounded by veterans that can help mask their mistakes.

name all the veterans we have playing in the secondary.

The fricking keyboard coaches on here are hilarious. There are multiple factors that affected this defense. It isn't just House. That being said they do need to pick it up on the recruiting side and if that is a reflection of coaches then changes will need to be made but anyone saying all those other factors had no bearing on this defense do not know what they are talking about. Just like last year when the mantra was Dembrock can't coach in the SEC and JD needed to be benched. keyboard coaches. LOL

The defense was horrible when Wingo, Alexander, Chestnut, Sam, Harris, etc were playing.

Do you follow the sport? It's common knowledge that the first 15 or so scripted plays ate usually the best and most practiced plays a team has. What happened after that? Our talent took over.

So you made my point, but you don’t even know it.
