He's the exception. Who else did not get fired in the last 40 years?

Not that this talking point really matters.

Add Paul Dietzel. Another NC winning coach that left for Army.

Only coach I ever remember retiring from here was Charlie Mac. Dale Brown and Skip did, but they were not football.

Probably Urban Meyer

He didn't retire. He had health\family issues then moved north and coached again.

Moral of the story. No one in the SEC get's to just retire anymore unless your competing for championships your entire career.

There are a couple things at play here.

1. coaches Egos are entirely too strong to let them give up. To get to that level, you have to be able to convince yourself that you are the man for the job.

2. Why retire when you can get a buyout?

How many schools would’ve stuck with miles through the “toss dive” era can anyone please go back and look at Brandon Harris’ stats :( This narrative LSU has “unrealistic” expectations is lazy. All we wanted was for Kelly to get us in the 12 team playoff. Not a huge ask with a 20 million dollar roster.

still pushing the false narrative eh? OMG ED liked pussy! the horror!

lost his drive? you have zero facts to back that claim up.

try COVID, opt outs, injuries, BLM/RC and players quitting as the main reasons.

Do they really care if they are getting paid $54M to not coach?

I'm pretty sure Paul Dietzel was hired as AD at LSU in 1978/79 explicitly to fire Cholly Mack.

No coaches will ever retire at LSU, they all get fired. It's the nature of the beast!!

Thats basically at every P4 school . You probably cant name ten P4 coaches in the last 25 years that actually retired without getting fired.

SEC coaches who have retired from their school since Bear Bryant:

Nick Saban
Vince Dooley
Gary Pinkel

Debatable:

Pat Dye (stepped down due to NCAA violations)
Phil Fulmer (stepped down under pressure)
Jerry Claiborne (was only at UK for 8 seasons)

That basically shows that Fowler is full of crap to say this about LSU.

McClendon was definitely shown the door.

So was Bowden at FSU. But its still called a retirement. Only because they couldnt loosen their grip at the end. And they didnt end up anywhere else, like Miles

Les Miles was at LSU for 11 years and Saban was not fired. Ed O would have not been fired if he stayed married but he decided to run woman instead of being a coach.

With the money spent on coaches and now especially with NIL, the schools, fans, and boosters are not going to sit around and be content with 0.500 seasons.
Gone are the days of Bowden, Paterno, Osbourne where you can have mediocrity and still keep your job.
Actually TBH, how many coaches have just retired after being at the school for 10+yrs?
Some of happened before 90's but that is the rarity. It isn't going to happen anywhere these days.
