Brown has more wins vs Kentucky than ANY SEC Coach. Ever.

He also gave Kentucky their most lopsided loss at home. Ever.

The way Dale's last five seasons went down at LSU made me rethink how good of a coach he was.

I love Coach Brown the motivator, the ambassador, the husband, the father and the champion of equal rights for all people. As a coach...?

Question for those who know:
Did Dale consistently run a clean program, Lester Earl notwithstanding?

I really don't know if Dale ran a clean program outside of Lester Earl ? You always hear that "everyone cheats."

What truly happened with Lester Earl ? If I am objective, I have a difficult time believing that the NCAA handed out severe penalties to the program in 1998 based on the words of a teenager. There had to be a paper trail and more corroboration with people in the know. Dale ran his mouth a lot but I think the NCAA had more goods on the program than a simple Witch Hunt to get revenge on coach brown.

no, not quite.

Dale could take a team of solid, but not NBA quality players, and make runs in the NCAA tournament. As long as you weren't Indiana coached by Bobby Knight, you wanted no part of a matchup with an "average" LSU team.

And he did achieve with talent during the first Final Four run.

But something happened with that second big talented team, with CJ and Shaq and the rest. There were times that they looked like an NBA team, but they never put it together.

I think we'll never truly know the truth on Lester Earl. We do know he lied, we just don't know whether he lied when he said he took the cash from Johnny or when he said years later he did not and was pressured to say so. We will never really know.

What we do know is there were other violations LSU admitted to aside from the cash to Earl thing, and many of the eventual sanctions were self-imposed by LSU based on those. LSU did not admit to the cash to Earl violation but the NCAA cited that in it's report and tacked on another couple of sanctions to what LSU already imposed on itself.

The NCAA later cleared Johnny on Earl's statement that he never took the cash from Johnny. The fact again still remains we really don't know. One could reasonably speculate that Earl had some motivation to revise his statement, so we really just don't know.

As to whether Dale ran a clean program, I've heard many of the stories others of that era have and some of those from folks very close to the program. LSU was never cited for any of those so I can only say IMHO probably not all that clean, but maybe not as bad as some.

Go back and watch Daddy Dale masterfully coach the 1986 games vs GA TECh and UK in the Omni. With less talent.

Considering that the NCAA never put LSU on probation before the Lester Earl accusation when Dale Brown dogged the NCAA whenever he could (rightly so), I would say he ran a clean program. Shaq said he couldn't afford a TV in college on the "Shaq and Dale" TV special. So it doesn't seem that he was buying players.

You can definitely criticize his Xs and Os, but that's a moronic statement if I've ever seen one.

Brown definitely was way more than a spectator as Jose Vargas found out in the clip below...

We went 17-1 in the 80-81 season in the sec. with Dale. And a final 4 appearance. Magical times for us. Ain't no way on God's green, beautiful earth that we'll ever see LSU basketball reach that level again. I'm a season ticket holder and support LSU basketball with my soul, but if LSU ever goes 17-1 in the sec again I'll be the next honey badger.

They might not go 17-1 again, but they can have tournament success, make the Final Four and possibly even win an NC with the right coach/player combo.

To you idiots who say Dale Brown was a bad coach, he didn't make two Final 4's, two more Elite 8's, one more Sweet 16, four SEC Titles, one SEC Tournament Title, and make to 13 NCAA (which is five more times than all the other LSU basketball teams combined) ......He didn't achieve without doing some solid coaching. Also to you Nerdy Know Nothing's, "Do you think he just sat around when LSU was able to beat Memphis State with William Bedford, Georgia Tech with John Salley and Kentucky with Kenny Walker with a 6'6" Center in Rickey Blanton on their way to the Final 4 in 1986? He developed a solid defensive strategy to deal with those All American Centers. The program dipped near the end, but he put LSU basketball on the map at that time. There is such a lack of knowledge when it comes to all sports on this site.

LSU was lucky to have Dale Brown. The fact that so many on this board denigrate him is ome of the many reasons I take few of the opinions around here seriously. I simply write it off to clueless millenials. Dumbasses abound

Dale constantly called out the NCAA, and they went after him for years. Not even minor violations. They had to arm twist Lester Earl into lying, to get Dale Brown. They didn't want the truth, they just wanted someone willing to take down Dale

And he was a very good coach. His freak defense and ability to incorporate Winters triangle offense are attributes of solid coaching. He just seemed to be really unlucky. Derrick Taylors addiction to video games, Hack a Shaq, Leonard Mitchells wrestling injury, Chris Jacksons misunderstood tourettes, Lester Earl, Rudy Macklins toe, etc
