Let’s say Scott Woodward hired you, or Chris Beard, or even Bobby Hurley two years ago. You/they have 0 scholarship players, and looming NCAA violations. How do you/they shape a roster?

On paper, McMahon did what looked like the right thing. Brought his best players over from Murray St, brought in other transfers, and signed several freshmen that will stay multiple years to try and build a core. The Murray St players were just not good other than KJ, Adam Miller was not good (a Wade guy), the freshmen showed signs but were freshmen - overall a terrible year, but you have to just bring in almost anyone that will come.

This year, you brought some guys back home (Wright, Cook, Stewart). Wright and Cook are pretty good SEC players. Stewart hasnt played in a while due to injury. Brought in a former 5 star Kentucky player who has been hurt. Baker has been ok. Signed a great freshman in Mike Williams and another top 100 guy in Chest who is redshirting. The team is going to go from 2 conference wins to about 6-8 in year 2 — not good, but better

Year 3 is when the decision has to be made if McMahon is going to be the guy. He has 2 top 80 guys signed and seems to be in the running for more good recruits. Reed and Ward COULD be good players but they have not taken that next step this year like I hoped, albeit we brought in some guys who need to ball in their hands. Mike Williams can be really good. If he gets some more good recruits and a couple good transfers we have to be at least .500 next year in conference. If Ward and Reed are mere role players and we’re middling at 6-8 wins again then we have to move on.

My (unimportant) jury is still out on him. I’m pulling for him and understand what he took over was a mess. Really cant take another dead PMAC next year

What stands at out least with this team, is they fight and dont quit. They all seem to like each other and gel well. Rebuilding a culture goes a long way

9 days till first pitch

Randomly hired Chris beard away from Texas, just so we could do the same thing and fire him mid season?

1.PG. Need a ball handler, who can get his own shot, but more importantly can control the game.
Then I would want 4-5 guys between 6’5”-6’8”, that are long and athletic. Quick on there feet, bouncy, can defend 1-4, allowing us to switch on everything.
I’d want 2 guy that are 6’9” bruisers. Monsters on the boards, good screeners.
I’d like a 6’11” rim runner( think bigby-Williams) who erases shots at the rim.
Lastly I’d want 2 6’3-6’4” spot up shooters, shooting over 40% from 3.

That’s I would construct the roster.

Good post but I disagree here. I think we have to make the tournament next year or McMahon needs to be gone. Auburn, Bama and Tennessee aren’t going anywhere and even teams we were previously ahead of in the past few years like Ole Miss, South Carolina, Florida and Mississippi Stats have all made great improvements and will all likely be better next year. I don’t see A&M being anything more than decent under Buzz but they will never be a pushover either. I think we absolutely need to make the tournament so we don’t get left in the dust in the conference and dig ourselves into a deeper hole.

At least .500 is likely on the bubble in SEC. A couple wins over and youre in.

Not that i disagree with you but if he goes 9-9 in conference and goes to NIT and wins a game or 2 theyre not going to tear it all down and rebuild again after 3 years of improvement

Fair point, but then he better have a fricking top 10 team in year 4. Bruce Pearl should be the example in a situation like this. Auburn was mediocre to bad his first 3 seasons and then he had them in the top 10 in year 4 and hasn’t looked back since with the exception of the 2021 season when they randomly sucked.

If everyone returns and the only have to recruit 1 top notch transfer, then we should be over .500 and looking to compete to get into the tourney. The program still has a couple of years to be completely rebuilt, but we are possibly most of the way back next year. Gotta remember that Wade's last year was 9-9 with a so-so recruiting class coming in.

This is incorrect. It was quite literally gonna be his best class but he’s gone so it doesn’t matter.

How can anyone take you seriously? There were multiple five stars in the 2022 class before we let the national media give us a pseudo death penalty.

Thanks for a rational argument. Those of us not calling for CMM's head already are given cute nicknames, and are constantly being told we are content being mediocre. I am not. I just think you have to look at this as CMM's first year. I know, transfer portal, blah, blah. First year he had 1 player and potential sanctions looming. Sucks, but that is a scratch. You get who you can get.

Would you dissenters really want to fire McMahon now. You Realize how hard it would be to interest a top candidate.. LSU has produced some basketball legends, but you are not a blue-blood, you have an old facility, and you have proven you will fire a coach 18 months into a steep rebuild.

It is too early to judge, and too early to fire if you want to be taken seriously by the next candidate. Here's hoping we won't need a next for a long time.

Wasn't the class basically Cisse and some kid named Marvel? Guess I missed them in the All-American lists....

Just looked it up, Cisse was never committed to LSU. Just made his top 6 list. So who was the other amazing player that was once committed?

It is hilarious that you would use some news articles as an excuse for Wade but McMahon should be able to blow off an actual NOA in recruiting.

Get a player or two that can rebound and rim protect. We have neither right now, Although Reed has of recent games has given us some blocks at the rim.

Start with getting tougher inside and rebounding. Add a good PG. I like that the PG coming in next year has some size. We have a few pieces and love Williams, but need to close on a difference maker or two. The 2 guys coming in next year look good, but need to finish the class strong. Not too sure McMahon will be here after next year unless we take a big leap.

Wade’s last year they were a 6 seed and were very young.

Murray, Gaines, Fudge, Efton Reid, Adam Miller were all returning.

They were going to be a top 15 team last year before we self sabotaged the program

It's pretty unbelievable you use Efton Reid and Adam Miller as examples of a strong roster on Wade's team. Reid is now on what his 3rd team since then. Has he made any contribution anywhere he's been? Has time fogged your mind on all those missed shots from Miller his last year here. All I'm hearing is revisionist history to support Wade and pull down McMahon.

That's not a top 15 team. And there is no way that Marvell Allen and the other guy replace Eason and Days, much less improve the team. And we all know now that Adam Miller needed at least another year to recover.

Finally I recall there were rumors that Gaines and Reid were possible transfers. While that would open up spots for incoming transfers, no one was coming in once we got the NOA, Wade or no Wade.
