Maybe the delineation should be between "Greatest Coach in LSU History" vs. "Best Coach in LSU History". Miles is the greatest because of the longer tenure and larger legacy he has created, but he's obviously not the best to ever coach here. I don't think we have to even have that discussion.

If Saban left Bama would bear be the best in Bama history?

He'll be remembered as that guy that the clueless fans continued to support when the knowledgable ones knew he didn't have it since his 1st game in TS.

Best is about a lot more than just the numbers.

Sabah is the best COACH we've had and it's fricking delusional to say otherwise.

If all that mattered was numbers, then one could say that prior to Saban being at Alabama, Larry Coker was a better college coach than Saban.

A great personal guy with character but an incompetent head football coach that makes poor game decisions that cost his teams games:

Ball on 35 yd line, 1:04 on the clock, 1 TO (burned 2 due to bad coaching but I digress) Come on man...a youth football coach knows what to do in this situation. RUN THE FOOTBALL you don't need to pass just need a few yards, heck you can clock it... pick up yards; Whisky was tired RUN THE FOOTBALL, use your TO to set up a game winning FG. WE have a great not good FG Kicker , No excuses fellow LSU fans - FIRE LES MILES IMMEDIATELY

I really wish he would have retired or will retire in dignity. It's his time to go, but I don't want to fire our all time winningest coach.

It is a fact that Miles has had a better career here than Saban did.

Saban also wasn't trending up when he left for the NFL. There's no indication that he was going to be what is at Alabama if he stays here now.

I think it's fair to see that he learned a good bit as a coach from his experience with the Dolphins, on top of the fact that it is easier to win at Alabama.

Considering the era, you could make an argument that Miles underachieved. I would rank Saban first. Then I would take Arnsparger before Miles.

While he was at LSU? Maybe. It's quite debatable though.

You all are not looking at this fairly. Y'all are also way too emotional.

One of the luckiest sob's to ever coach. A man with a 28-21 record was handed the keys to a Ferrari and he owes all of his success to Saban and Dinardo. I will always wonder what could have been if we had hired a good coach following Saban. Everyone wants to give les credit for being a great recruiter...was he great at Ok. St. And oh how has Ok. St. Done without LesS

We are looking at more than numbers.

Using your logic, Coker is one of best coaches ever in college football

Good man, championship caliber coach, failed to adapt to a game that passed him by which led to his firing/stepping down

Les Miles will be remembered as one of the greatest football coaches in LSU history, no doubt about that. As of right now (2016), he is second only to Cholly Mac in total wins. He has led LSU to two SEC titles, a national championship in 2007, and LSU played for another national championship in 2011. Every single season he's been at LSU, since 2005, has been a winning season with a bowl game every year. He's had the kind of consistent success most coaches only dream about.

Yet... he is a polarizing figure. Some view him with adoration for his leadership, success, and personality, others view him as a buffoon who likes to eat grass, run a one dimensional vanilla offense, and bring attention to himself by saying quirky things to the media. The people who are of the latter variety also say he has done little with the amount of talent he's had at his disposal at LSU. They say LSU should have won multiple national titles with the talent they've had, and I don't disagree. There is no question LSU should have won the title in 2011, but LSU was given the daunting task of having to face and defeat Bama twice in one season. Just beating them once was hard enough, but twice? The deck was stacked against them as soon as Oklahoma State was upset by Iowa State and Bama moved back into the #2 spot.

Back to Miles. I like man, I think his personality makes him interesting. Saban is a football master-mind, but his personality is about as interesting as staring at a sheetrock wall. Still, the man wins championships on a yearly basis and I'm sure us Tiger fans would choose that over having a quirky coach.

When everyone thought Les was going to be fired after the Texas A&M game last season, when the game was over, his players hoisted him up on their shoulders and carried him off the field to a standing ovation from the LSU faithful. That tells you how, despite the constant frustration and questions, we still love Coach Miles and all he's done for LSU football.
