They royally F’d the CFB regular season with this move. For those thinking it’s awesome, just wait until you have a 9-2 or 10-1 Bama resting their starters for the Iron bowl or duplicate scenario for Ohio State/Michigan.

It will happen, and it will be an awful look for the sport.

Only way to salvage these large games is move them into 1st half of season and play all non-conference games in 2nd half. Ideally month of Nov.

Overall this blows and it’s so far away from what we grew up with.

Regular season was all the sport had left.

Historic rivalries, that usually have huge implications, will now be meaningless.

Traditions that have made the sport are being tossed out just to make a few more bucks.

do we really need non conference games anymore even though I know they need the $ to survive
just play a sec schedule
maybe go down to a 10 game schedule and start playoffs earlier and end before spring semester starts

I agree with this point that we should shave season to 11 or 10 games at this point.

Will never happen because of money.

you're underestimating how much home field advantages will be important in this playoff. a 1-2 loss team losing in week 13/14 could mean they lose their bye or their home field advantage for round 1. It wouldn't be an in-or-out type of scenario anymore, but it would definitely still hold a lot of weight. I could maybe picture a scenario where an 11-0 team does this, but even then your seeding in the bracket still matters.

to have even the slightest guess as to who is better than who, you need non conference games.

Teams will be fighting for those bye weeks, and seeding, while the four loss teams will be fighting to get in. The regular season will become more significant, actually.

Dont know why people keep bringing this up, but there is a huge difference in the playoff in being Top 8 and being 9-16 vs. 17-24

Every playoff spot it not equal. If you want to "Rest your starters" in the final game of the year to potentially lose, you could lose a bye, or a home playoff game.

A.K.A. thats stupid

The only example here would be an 11-0 team going into the final weekend knowing they have a bye locked up either way, but they could be trading 1-2 for 5-6 if they lose, which means a likely tougher opponent in their first playoff game.

Move the iron bowl earlier in the year who says it needs to be at the end of the season?

of course byes and seedings are important, but to argue that the regular season will be more significant is utterly absurd.

The regular season will become far less important and this 24-team format is a terrible idea.

I’d rather have those teams fighting every week with rivals just to get in rather than worrying about “home field” and “seeding”.

If you have 4 losses that means you didn’t take care of business when you were supposed to and you shouldn’t be competing for a natty.

It's not absurd actually. The "the regular season will be diminished" crowd has been proven wrong the last two seasons, and is being proven wrong this season as well. The regular season will continue to be a spectacle.

I would argue that the 24 team format actually does increase the meaning of games particularly for teams with 2/3 losses later in the season. As bowl games have become more and more diminished due to opt outs, more emphasis on playoffs, etc., the second a team has 2 or 3 losses, the attention immediately moves to the next season. Teams are less motivated and are playing for essentially nothing at that point. If your team has the opportunity to make the playoffs even with a few losses, more emphasis is put on games especially later in the season.

Yes the impact of a single loss/win is diminished, but also the value of performing for the entire schedule is greatly increased for teams with a loss
