Bama will have to get penalized which seems to never happen. We have to get at least 2 turnovers. And we have to control field position like we did in 2011. It will take a defensive miracle to keep it close and give us a chance. Special teams might have to score some points for us to get a lead. It just doesn't seem possible but I hope our players don't feel that way and come ready to play. We cannot allow the refs to take over this game.

LSU will need to load the box but not bring pressure straight up the front (sit back). If they bring pressure/blitz through the A/B gaps, then this will give Hurts the ability (and running lanes) to scramble. What they need to do is similar to what they did with Manziel. Contain the edges, White spying on Hurts at all times, discipline when filling the gaps, and most importantly...load the box behind the DL, but have them stay there and fill any gaps. With the edges contained and gaps filled, Hurts will have to beat them through the air. This gives us our best chance at winning. If you blitz a QB like Hurts, he will make you pay with his legs.

Put this in another thread, but just wanted to share what a long-time friend and astute Bama fan sent me via email -

"For LSU it all comes down to QB play. He doesn't have to play like Tom Brady...but he has to be effective and efficient and back our LBs and Safeties' off the LOS. If that happens, Guice and your RBs will have creases to gain yards. If not, that is how Bama smothers teams. Right now I think we are a bit overrated because of the competition we have played so far. A&M was the only game that was tough, and to be honest it was more us just sucking arse on offense than it was them being good. We are more than beatable this year...and this is why. Our DL is super super thin. Our best end, Hand, has been out since Ole Miss with a meniscus. Word is we 'might' have him back for our game, but he won't be 100% or game ready. The loss of our top 2 rush outside linebackers for the season against FSU is significant and you would have to be someone who watches every game closely to notice. We have had to dial up CB and safety blitzes to create pressure on the QB without those guys...so when they are picked up, we get burned downfield.

Now the real reason we are beatable is the blueprint has been set for the last two years on how to slow down our offense. Tennessee did it for almost the entire first half, but didn't have the athletes on either side of the ball to complete the deal. You simply stack 8 in the box, slow down our running game and make Jalen Hurts throw. I love Jalen....he is a winner and a gamer....can break a play open with his legs like there is no other...but he 1) can't read defenses ...cannot go through progressions, 2) He tucks the ball if his only read isn't open, and often gets taken down at the LOS, and 3) his arm is actually below average. You know other than the last few years the trend is always the away team getting the best in our series. I'm certain this will be a TIGHT game and I think LSU has a great chance of winning. I won't be surprised....."

This seems pretty obvious but we should try to score at least 1 more point than they do.

I think we really have to be aggressive. It's a risk/reward approach. We need to nail some huge plays on offense without turning it over. On defense/Special teams, we need to force Bama to turn it over at least twice. It's a tall order, but it's probably the only realistic way of winning this game.

Sure, this approach possibly means getting blown out, but who really gives a shite if we lose a close game this season? "keeping it close" won't mean shite if we drop to 6-3, and lots of people are expecting us to get blown out anyway. Just go for it from the start and assess at halftime.

On defense, LSU will need to have some success limiting Alabama's running attack and force Hurts into 3rd and long situations. Arden Key has to have a good game, at least two sacks and maybe a forced fumble. If Alabama's running game gets untracked early, the game is already over.

On offense, LSU will HAVE to find a way to give Etling decent protection (if he gets the kind of "protection" he got against Ole Miss, LSU has NO chance to win). LSU will have to resort to quick passes because Etling will not have 3 to 4 seconds to throw it...screens, slants, drag routes and short to intermediate corner routes. The receivers will have to avoid dropping catchable balls, because first downs will be hard to come by as it is. Etling will need to make quicker decisions when throwing it. He can't stand back there and hold it for three seconds and expect to get the pass off. I would like to see Canada roll Danny out a lot more. That way, at least he has the option of simply throwing the ball away to avoid a sack if things go south.

LSU will have to have some semblance of a running game, at least 150 to 160 yards, in order for Etling's play-fakes to have any effect towards freezing the Alabama linebackers. I think a liberal dose of jet sweeps, motion, counters, reverses and try to make the Bama defense have to defend sideline-to-sideline. Maybe by the fourth quarter, their defense could be a little gassed.

Above all, LSU has to have ZERO turnovers and Conner Culp will need to keep up his excellent placekicking. And on kickoffs, Gamble has to kick it deep into the endzone and force touchbacks. Our kick coverage took a big step back against Ole Miss.

Considering we won't run for more than 70 yards on them (that number is being generous), put Brennan in shotgun and throw bombs the entire game.

Given our WR size, you've got to think we'd hook up on a few.

Complete at least 20 forward passes with no interceptions. If we can do that then the run game will have opened up.

HUNH seems to be Saban's only weakness, but it has to work or our defense will be gasses in the 1st half.

I dont expect us to win, but it would be nice to be competative.

No team has rushed for more than 75 yards against them all season. They are giving up an average of 66.4 per game. Do you really think it is possible to get nearly triple what they are allowing on the ground per game? With a quarterback that instills no fear whatsoever in the passing game? They will have 8-9 defenders in the box all night and will dare Etling to throw the ball. The east/west running on Bama has never worked, especially in a non-spread offense

These are the teams since 2011 that have beaten Alabama. Only one of them doesn't run some form of the spread or HUNH offense.

If LSU only rushes for 75 yards or less, then they have ZERO chance of winning, without some kind of miracle. Without forcing the Bama defense to have SOME respect for our running game, the pass rushers will be all over Etling almost the entire game, and it will be a blowout. There's no point in even talking about throwing the ball on Alabama, even in the spread formation, if we don't have something resembling a running game.

Please don't mis-understand me, I'm not PREDICTING what will happen (I full well know what is LIKELY to happen). I'm just stating, imho, what it will take for LSU to have a punchers chance of winning the game, or even making it close.

Close, sell out stacking the box against the run with 7 white spying on hurts, play lock down cover with two cbs and a safety. Make hurts throw to win.

The jet sweeps and motion will make their LBs actually have to think and move side to side and will take tons of pressure off of the OL this year. I dont think the talent/strength differential in our OL and their DL has been the problem the last few years. At least not as bad as its looked. The main prob is we run right into their loaded boxes and the whole front 7 just had to crash down on us.

I dont think LSU will win this game, but I look for much more production on offense this year. Pruitt will have to work for this one.
