How Does a HC Manage a Roster in This Era?

A staff can put together an amazing recruiting class and a year later, poof, half of 'em vanish into the bowels of the portal.
If someone can solve the mystery, pray tell.
Ideas:
- Incentivize players to stay for 4-years by having "4Y pool." IOW, you stay all four years, you get am extra million. Make a playoff, $250K. Win a natty, everybody gets $500K.
- Play with a smaller roster. Instead of spreading the NIL pool over 85 players. Spread it over say 60 or so. NFL teams do it. It would be better to have a roster of 60 'loyal' players than a roster of 85 of which 20+ leave for the portal At one time circa mid-70s we were limited to 48 player travel rosters for SEC games. About 50-55 players participate in our SEC games now.
- Staffs will have to come up with simple schemes on both sides of the ball that can be mastered in a spring and fall camp.

Pay your top guys on your roster handsomely and stay making the playoffs. The top teams will not have a lot of attrition because who wants to leave while your team has a chance to win a National Championship.

Do you think players in this era really care about winning a championship?
It won’t be long before players opt out of playoff games.

IMO...
Coach like you have a clue. Stop reacting all the time and blaming the players. They are a reflection of the coaching staff.
Get more playing time to the rest of the roster (especially QB).

It's coaching a football team, a sport, and getting paid 3-10mm/ yr depending on the school. The HC or the very close to highest paid staff in the country, are doing just fine. They wear free gear every day, eat/ drink free chef provided food, workout in world class gym, chill in recovery areas, coach a sport, and make an insane amount of money. It sounds fing amazing
Is portal/ nil t a shite show, yes, 1000%, but their paid like kings to coach a sport, sip some whiskey at night and figure it out. Ability to scheme around the players you have, vs making your players play your scheme is more important then ever.

Ummmm… the top dollar players do not give a shite. They know the odds are so low to begin with. Not to mention, if someone is at UT or LSU and competing for a championship, they’re just as likely at a lot of other schools to win.
Also they don’t care.
A lot of pros don’t even care. And the kids are basically pros.

all ideas are welcome right now for sure

Most top talent care primarily about short-term money. Each year this becomes more true to a greater extent.
Yes, there are still players who are at least partially motivated by other things. But they are a dwindling minority.
Think of it this way: you are a 19-year-old linebacker who signed with Texas Tech outta high school. TT paid you $100K that first year. You did very well and made all freshman big 12 team. TT pays you $250K for Year 2. You become 3rd team all American. TT offers you $350 and Texas offers you $1.2 million. What do you do? You go to Texas.

Basically what Bill B. plans to do at UNC. A HC to coach the team, a GM to manage the roster.

Let's assume BK is doing everything almost perfectly. How much does that change what is happening? IMO, it wouldn't change things much at all. Maybe it would. I just don't think it would.

I think I know why UNC got belichik.
It might be nfl level with no rules.

Don't we basically have that now with Austin Thomas? And players are still bailing.

Exactly. Just ask Jahkeem Stewart if he cares anything about winning a championship by signing with dumpster fire USC.

You can’t that’s why Nick Saban quit coaching.

Stanford may be on to something with the
”general manager” position.
I’m not sure how Andrew Luck is the best option for that position but who knows.

I know of at least one player in the playoffs that is in the portal. I am sure there are others.
