You and I are thinking on the same page for this thread at least.

I can’t beleive someone would even ask this. LSU had one of the worst defenses for an SEC team I have ever seen in 2023. That offense would have won a National Title with probably 80% of the defenses LSU has had over the last 30 years. And that is conservative If anything.

they were 53rd in scoring defense that year, and 108th in passing yards allowed. Is that what we're calling "a beast" now?

why cant football fans, and even football media, stop pretending like one transformational QB can single-handedly deliver championships? Look at guys like Marino, Tarkenton, Moon, etc... All LEGENDS with no ring. Why didn't Vick win it all at VT? Or Lamar at Louisville? Brady at Michigan?

Like I said you boys just looking at the stats and don’t remember Nick fairley making huge stops in tight games.

You do realize that defense won a national title right.

How many defensive players did Auburn have drafted in 2010 besides Fairley? What was Auburn’s record the next season when he was gone?

They were an average defense propped up by one guy. After he left, they weren’t even average.

Nobody gives a shite about the next year. The OP is asking how Cam did it. He did it because Auburns defense put him in situations to win close games.

Anyone arguing against this is a fricking idiot in this thread.

Cam got it done. People don't like to admit that for how bad LSU's 2023 defense was, the offense failed in crucial moments in the losses.

LSU was up 17-14 at the half against Florida State and didn't score again until a garbage TD with 1 minute left.

LSU was up 49-47 with 5:06 left in the 4th against Ole Miss and went 3 and out.

LSU was tied with 7:30 left in the 3rd against Alabama and never scored again.

The numbers, the eye test and the draft results all say the same thing. Clearly and resoundingly. They were fricking average, overall.

That was enough for Cam to be able to carry them to a title, but this revisionist, “their defense was amazing” bullshite that even you seem to be backtracking on now when faced with some facts, is just ridiculous.

Cam and their offense carried that team. He was elite and college football hadn’t evolved to account for QBs like him and this style of play yet. And they had some good complimentary pieces around him. Their offense won that title. The defense did just enough to not frick it up, even though they tried a few times (first half vs Bama, for instance).

Fairley was a wrecking crew on defense by himself some games. He would take over a game at times.

The play of the oline gave Auburn several unstoppable plays. The defense was not ranked 100th lol

No one is saying Cam didn’t carry them….but the defense was able to get stops and give them opportunities to win.

I’m not backtracking on shite. Auburns defense was great that year. The shutout bama in the 2nd half down 21 on the road.

I would have upvoted you if you had correctly used the word “dominant” and not “dominate”.

This site has taught me that there’s millions of grown adults out there who apparently don’t know the difference between dominate and dominant.

You’re relying on opinions and ignoring facts.

Their defense was #53 in scoring defense and #60 in total defense. That’s not a dominant or elite defense.

It sounds like you’re using the “eye test”, which is a 100% BS term that needs to die in a fire. It’s just another term for bias and political BS. Our eyes deceive us quite often.

Auburn’s defense was just adequate enough to allow them to win. Nothing more, nothing less

Look at the defenses.

Total Defense Rank
2010 Auburn - 53
2023 LSU - 108

If you compare the scoring in the 6 biggest games from each team regarding opponents points this is what you get:
2010 AUBURN:
1. South Carolina - 27.
2. Arkansas - 43.
3. LSU - 17.
4. Alabama - 23.
5. South Carolina - 17.
6. Oregon - 19.

LSU 2023:
1. Florida State - 45.
2. Ole Miss - 55.
3. Missouri - 39.
4. Alabama - 42.
5. Florida - 35.
6. Texas A&M - 30.

So if you compare those defenses, ours gave up at least 30 points every game and over 40 3 times! Auburn gave up over 30 one time! That defense in 2023 was a historically awful defense!

The LSU defense in 2023 was one of the worst I have ever seen at any level.
