Damn close. If they can keep some of the playmakers on defense and reload the offensive line, with just a slightly more capable passing game, this is an elite football team next season. The level of freshman and sophomore talent on this team is absurd.

I know this isn't the popular opinion but how in the world can anyone justify the 1.2 Million we are paying Cam? The offense is awful. Yes, we have no qb, but that falls on the coaching staff and it also gives the staff an opportunity to get creative, which they do not.

I'm convinced we could pay someone $250k a year and get the exact same results. Then use the money saved to up the recruiting budget.

There's an argument that could be made that we should be near there right now. As poor as our team was, we came within 1 throw of beating Miss St. We beat Ole Miss and beat Bama but lost to the refs. If not for the refs, we win and we should be in the top 10 (should be - who knows if we would have been). Alas, a few well timed calls / no calls and instead we're barely top 25 - the polls are stupid.

LSU is probably a top 10 tem at present, not based upon season record but just in development. They have proved they can play with the top ranked teams.

Each season is different and results are influenced by personnel losses, player development, experience, schedule, officiating , luck, injuries etc. Based upon anticipated returning players and key recruits it would be unlikely that this team starts slow and has to play catch up like this season. Consistency at QB and receiver and on defense will be the determining factor.

We need to keep players long enough to have a good offense and good defense in the same year. It seems like when we finally develop a qb and have a prolific offense, the defense is young. We develop a stingy defense and the offense can't produce. Gotta have both and that's difficult to do with the mass exodus we've had to the NFL the last couple of years.

And it would be saying that after next year Jennings would be an NFL quality qb which you have to be seriously smoking some good stuff if you believe that

No, you'd have to be smoking crack. The worlds best weed wouldn't make you think that.

When LSU finds an adequate QB. Don't have to be great when we have a solid defense, but there will be one or two games each year when the QB has to win it through the air.

I have my doubts if Jennings will develop into that QB. Harris is still unknown. Next year will be frustrating as hell if neither steps up.

A decent QB away. With a balanced offense and this D, we could do some serious damage.

I think we're very close but not there yet.....
It's the not there yet part - Until LSU coaches are ready to keep the run game but also include a productive pass (which includes pitching and catching) game to balance our run-prone offense, I don't see LSU competing for anything serious any time soon. We'll be just one more "good-enough" team with 9 or 10 wins, but not the big ones.

If we couldn't beat a very vulnerable Alabama last week, and mostly because of the lack of effective pitch and catch, along with a little bit of referee unfavorable input, and a bonehead penalty, then I don't see anything changing anytime soon.

It should not have come down to that. The last 74 seconds of regulation time are hard to digest.

Not even in the conversation right now.

Take a look at the top 4 teams right now and then look at LSU right now. That will answer your question.

One HORRIBLE unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that should never have been thrown, and one completed Hail Mary...So one play and one awful call. (and before you say MSU out-classed us, blah blah blah, we were one completed pass away from beating them. Auburn needed several miracles last season to play in the Natty, but if two plays don't go their way, they were a 3 loss team last year too.)

not as close as most believe- Get us a real QB- he only has to be a mett or matt level and we get there

Keep the current level under center and we will stay out of the top ten

Equity has now hit SEC west- no longer can we skirt by with great talent on defense, RBs and WRs- we must have some who can read a defense, read the field, make a decision in under 4 seconds and accurately pass the ball.

People bitch about us not being in the top four. Yet they pull for other SEC teams to win because it "makes the SEC look good to the media". As long as competition is this strong our chances are slim. LSU fans are dumb.
