Our sc program needs a long hard look.

Perhaps we need to go get Scott Cochran out of rehab, put some structure around him and let him go to work.

I might get down voted, but I think it's the offensive coordinator not the line or the backs.

It's partly OC but Kelly's offensive scheme is deeply flawed

Tackles are elite at all phases
Guards are just average, maybe slightly above.
Center is subpar.
That nets out to a slightly above average OLine.
It takes all 5 to be great and it’s hard for 4 to make up for 1 especially when that 1 is the center where the run game is most impacted.

It just basically boils down to it being easier to stalemate the defender rather than having to drive them back a yard or two. Very difficult to do in the sec but it’s what separates the good from the elite.

Agreed but then maybe we should stop running inside zones if the interior is so weak

The Center

A lot of people do t realize just how correct you are in this statement. In run blocking, he’s the guy that needs to get the immediate push through. Especially if running inside the tackles. He’s got to set that middle stage with some push forward.

You sure about that? Didn’t he take a couple 3 star players and make them first round picks for the NFL at Texas?

My question with this is why are people (national media) still proclaiming Campbell and Jones 1st rounders when they seem to have such a clear flaw to their game.

There are 5 guys on the line.
If the center and 2 guards can’t run block, it doesn’t matter if the tackles can or not.

most simple way to put it.... attitude, and lack of aggression.

pass blocking requires you to sit back, absorb the blow and redirect the path of the pass rusher...
Run blocking requires you to get mean, get lower than the other guy, and aggressively drive him back, or into the ground. our o-line simply is not mean enough, in my opinion.

How is the scheme that produced one the best offenses in the history of college football flawed? Please give us specifics.

Maybe they’re not putrid at run blocking and it’s putrid run scheme.

Example: 4th down run with K Jackson running wide.

Scheme

We’re not very creative with run plays

Would he be better at guard next season and the RS fresh Echols steps in at C?

I can think of 3 reasons:

1. BK has recruited a bunch of Tackles to fill out the O-Line, so no wonder they’re so much better at pass blocking. Les Miles used to fill that O-Line up with “road grader” type Guards.

2. The system itself is more conducive to running pass plays and runs that look like pass plays. This directly leads to my last point.

3. They have bad leverage. They run block the same way they pass block: vertically. Nobody ever gets their shoulders beyond their knees. Nobody ever gets lower than the defender.

All state right tackle from Florida here. It really is a completely different thing. Pass blocking requires you to have great technique, being light on your feet yet firm, and also having great footing, hands, placement, and all around balance.

Run blocking is mean. I've had normal days, and I've had days where the other two all state lineman were blocking me in a double team in a pregame vs our rival and I blew the smaller one 5 yards back, then did the same in the following 1 on 1 with the other guy. Adrenaline, ferocity, motivation, and energy come far more into play. Youve got to want to kill the person in front of you.

You can see the difference, one is technique, one is heart. There's some guys I trained that never ever had the heart and ferocity to run block. Soft as Charmin. One was like 6'4 300 lbs, such a waste.

Let me help you by rephrasing your question: How can established offensive lineman at a top-tier national football program be so ineffective at run blocking?

I'm not going into specifics og all that, people are talking about it all over the site like the "reality takeaways" thread. How's our run game look? How was it last year? Have we run the ball since BK got to LSU? The answer is no. How many times a game do you watch and say "boy that was a great play design" If we make a big play it's cause our WR out athletes the defender or cause Nuss made a tremendous throw. As for last year even as great as the passing game was we still had no balance. What we had was a Heisman dual threat QB who will win rookie of the year and maybe MVP and two first round WR who are already dominant. It wasn't a fantastic offensive scheme
