HOOVER, Ala. — A decade after major conference realignment shook up college football, big changes might again be on the horizon. Texas and Oklahoma of the Big 12 have both reached out to the Southeastern Conference about potentially joining the powerful league, a high-ranking college official with knowledge of the situation told the Houston Chronicle on Wednesday. An announcement could come within a couple of weeks concerning the potential addition of UT and OU to the league, the person said, which would give the SEC 16 schools and make it the first of a national super-conference.

Texas A&M exited the Big 12 nine years ago this month, and along with Big 12 ex Missouri gave the SEC 14 teams, which it has been at since. UT’s addition to the SEC would also mean the Aggies and Longhorns would again meet annually on the football field for the first time since 2011.

ETA: per Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesmen, it will take a majority vote of the current SEC schools to accept Texas and OU into the league.

Second edit: some things I am hearing from talking heads in OKC, a lot of this is likely about TV contracts and revenue. OU has become very dissatisfied with Big 12's TV deal and constantly getting stuck with 11 AM kickoffs; Texas realizes Longhorn Network can't compete financially with the SEC's TV deal (obviously). Also, they see the recruiting advantages of being in the SEC. Realignment and super conferences may be inevitable and they see the writing on the wall.

They would need to realign the divisions as well and not strictly along geographical spots on the map.

And Texas would have to agree to share revenues fairly, which I doubt they'd ever do.

Can't make such a homophobic move in the current PC environment.

I don’t think they would be inquiring if they weren’t onboard with doing that.

I like it. These two teams are great for the match-ups.

Don’t want Texas.

They strong armed the Big12 to the point it almost collapsed (will collapse if they and OU leave) and they are arrogant enough that they will come into the SEC and expect everyone to bow down to them.

That would pretty much immediately annihilate the Big 12 right? I mean it'd be CUSA overnight...

If they do this, you have to move the Bama schools to east.

If they are ever allowed to join, the NC game every year should definitely include two SEC teams! Forget about Clemson and Ohio State! What other league would be able to even try and compare themselves to the SEC? The rest of college football can fight for the smaller bowls!

Imagine a world where OU doesn't get to coast to the playoffs just to get their doors blown off.

What about the Longhorn Network? I don't see the SEC going along with that.
