Will do people think there is one and only one strategy that works?

There is a logic behind “pitching off” as the host vs a 4 seed, which is typically a mid week game or early season level opponent and it has been done many many times successfully. Keeping the rotation the same using an ace on his normal rest also makes sense and “works”.

I mean looking at all the stats the teams that pitched their Ace were 100%. The team that pitched off were not. All 4 1 seed losses pitched off

Oregon State pitched their game 1 guy and lost.

Teams with great hitting may be able to pitch off...

Did they? I am not an expert on Oregon State baseball, but I didn’t think it looked like they pitched their Friday night guy. Actually appears you are correct. Although him being Oregon State’s Ace is questionable as he has only thrown around 50 innings this year. They have better starting pitchers.

Yeah Segura is usually their Friday night guy, but he’s not their ace pitcher. He’s 3rd at best.

I had the game on last night but I was busy and not really paying attention. How deep did Eyanson go?

It seems like the ideal scenario is to start one of your horses and if you can build a cushion you yank him early so that he'll be available from the pen. But if you fail to build that cushion then you needed him in there anyway, right?

Took him out with 2 outs in the 8th. Primeaux threw one batter and then Rizy threw the 9th

I am so goddamn tired of these idiots and their “Pitch off!” “Pitch off!” bullshite.

Besides the OP’s very good point that the talent levels are much closer, you gamble and lose the first game then what? You’ve got to win four fricking games in a row in two days. You lose the third (winners bracket) game? You get a rematch. These “pitch off!” idiots need to go jack off.

Yeah I’m not necessarily saying he’s their best pitcher but he started the year coming out of the bullpen on Fridays but has been their game 1 starter for the past month or so.

If the rest of the staff couldn’t hold UALR to 6 runs, that doesn’t bode well for Game 3 against a better opponent.

We will be fine. Quite the stretch you’re making there.

No its a legit concern. Quit saying it will be fine. If we were scoring runs galore then it will be fine but we are not. So now pitching comes into play because out lack of run production

People acting like one way is head and shoulders above the other is dumb. When in reality, maybe there are multiple different ways that a #1 seeded team can both win and lose a regional. The strategy can vary year by year based on team in your regional, who your pitchers are, how good your offense is, etc.

This.

That UALR starting pitcher has been on a roll of late. If we had only one ace instead of two, I'd bet our ace would have pitched last night. It's a situational decision.

Pitching off is fine.

Starting our regular rotation would have been fine.

Both are ok as long as we win the first two games. Surely we can piece something together in game 3 rather than game 4 or 5.

This is the key point most of these dullards don't understand. Pitching AE last night saved the high-end arms in the pen.

Suppose Noot started and only went 2-3 innings and struggled. You then spend the rest of the game running through bullpen arms trying to find one that works. It wasn't like the offense put up a ton of runs, so the game would have likely been close.

I will still never get behind using Skenes vs Tulane, but what Johnson did last night was 100% correct.
