He handled ST for Kelly for 5 years before they came here. Was he competent then? Did Kelly not figure out his competence over five years? How does he suddenly become crap? 5 years is a long time to skate if you are incompetent.

According to ND that's not what happened. Apparently ND ran him off and BK wanted to keep him around.

Its hard to compare across units, but without a doubt, we have the worst special teams I have ever seen at LSU, and the worst special teams of any team in the country.

Every. Single. Aspect. From the design (kick protection formation against FSU, wings too flexed), to the preparation (missed assignments on every single kick against FSU), personnel (You do not put a true freshman at wing on kick protection who has never performed that duty), to play calling (Not fair catching kickoffs is subjective, but stupid imo), to execution (Catching kicks inside the 10, kicking off out of bounds, coverage on kicks) has been off the charts horrible.

Without looking at the actual teams below us, I would imagine their special teams aren't filled with caliber of athlete that LSU has on hand.
By the same "without looking at" token, who were they all playing?

We had 35 returning scholarship players from last year. Our caliber of athlete isn't that great, either, unless you wanna throw a top WR back there.

We'd be 3-0 right now if special teams play was only mediocre.

Polian is not a coordinator coach... he is the special teams coach.

He is the Recruiting Coordinator that has us in the hunt for Top 5 class.

For reference, in 2020 we were ranked 23rd, and in 2021 16th 2019 - 12th 2020 - 23rd 2021 - 16th 2022 - 125th

Where did ND rank during those seasons? That’s going to be a better gauge of Polian’s coaching than 3 games during which both he and the players are adjusting to each other.

Well, despite the freshmen and transfers, we don't have a lot of depth. Who made the big punt return tackle? Our freshman O Lineman. Who tracked the guy down on the kickoff that got called back? One of our transfer DBs.

Those guys are busy learning their "real" positions. It would be nice to have suitable reserve talent to put out there, that you also don't count on big-time to win games on offense or defense.

That just doesn't seem to be the case; it's a bandaid right now.

I get that Polian is great with some of the administrative stuff but he is a liability on the field. Give him Ponamsky's old job and keep him away from the X's and O's.

That’s not going to happen. If you aren’t an on-field coach you can’t make any off-campus visits and your ability to interact with recruits on-campus is limited. People need to get this through their thick skulls because everyone just keeps saying the same shite over and over. You can’t just make guys analysts and have them still do what he’s doing. And what’s he doing right now is locking down a top 4 class in year one.

He obviously needs help running special teams and based on Kelly’s comments today, that’s happening now.

At least one other person on here gets it. Back in the early spring and LSU was restocking a completely decimated roster posters on here were blowing Polians trumpet loud and clear. He was being touted as our secret weapon because of his superior ability to evaluate real talent beyond star ratings.

I saw the Bengals get 2 kicks blocked a week ago and they have one of the best kickers in the NFL...the line missed blocks and allowed penetration. I guess their ST coach sucks??

Did you even watch the game? The snapper was injured and a 3rd string TE was filling in

The first two kicks (PAT and blocked FG) Cam Wire was on the end of the line (not wing position). On the PAT he was pushed back almost to the kicker and on the blocked FG he missed the block on the inside man who blocked the FG. Wing was fine on both of those kicks.

The best special teams is having a strong legged kicker on kick offs so as to limit returns and punters who have a 4 second+ hang time. Coach can't do anything about return guys muffing other than switching out.

its the fricking NFL and they had 2 kicks blocked...how were the snaps bad? did you watch? the timing looked good but the penetration is what caused the kicks to be blocked...the backup snapper wasn't to blame

pretty sure every coach tells the returner to stand on 10 and don't go backwards but they still do it

if this happens more than 0 times, then that player should be replaced for someone who can take coaching.
