Plenty of blame to go around. I expected that youth to be farther along. They weren't. That's on Aranda AND Orgeron (or all coaches in general).

I dont know how much further along you can get true freshmen. That is a whole lot of info to shove down their throats.

I give credit to our D. Losing Alexander, Key being out of shape, and Lawrence being hurt are a whole lot to overcome. We simply must have more help on the DLine.

But the OLine I dont give the same pass....yes we have one true freshman starting. But he is at the easiest position to play on the line and bracketed by alot of experience.

Honest question here, but what is happening?

This team was always going to have depth and talent issues in some spots.
Offseason attrition and other issues made some of those problems even worse.
We're dealing with multiple injuries which compounds the first two.
And to top it off we look sloppy, undisciplined, and disorganized. The staff appears to be winging it or flying by the seat of their pants as one host put it in the postgame Saturday night.

One single thing isn't the problem, it's a combination of several things.

LSU has 31 players with Defensive stats right now.

15 are freshmen or sophmores. Even counting Redshirt freshmen as sophmores, there are more freshmen I believe.

That's true. Guys are getting open down the field and plenty of throws are being made when there's time, but that's the key... there's no time. If we can figure out our guard play we will be leaps and bounds better

We replaced all that talent we lost with talent. The problem is they're all freshmen and learning on the fly. The thin D line is a problem because any successful defense starts up front.

I really want to believe this but I've seen LSU replace guys who've left with young talent so many times without skipping a beat.

I'm not necessarily defending O, but he's playing the hand he was dealt.

Missing on Wilson and Shelvin being ineligible really hurt the D-line, along with Alexander getting injured and Herron being suspended. The only real recruiting miss was Wilson, who, according to another thread, is red-shirting this year at FSU. He probably thought Shelvin would be eligible, and, even if he knew better, it was too late to find a replacement.

So, look at the key players:

Starting Safety - True Freshman
Backup Safeties - Two RS Freshmen or inexperienced sophomores (maybe one or both played special teams last year)
Starting Corner - True Freshman
Starting Nickle - True Freshman
Backup Nickle - RS Freshman or maybe he played ST last year
Starting ILBs - True sophomore and first-year starter
Backup ILBs - Two true freshmen
Best DL, when able to play - True sophomore
Backup NG - True sophomore, now out with injury
Backup NG/DE - RS Freshman, has had to start
Backup DE - True freshman
Best Edge Rusher - Missed two games with injury, still getting back into game shape
Second Edge Rusher - True freshman

There is a LOT of inexperience out there. Talent is great, but it has to learn. Freshmen and sophomores will make mistakes, including lack of discipline and not knowing where they're supposed to be.

As others have said, "inexperience, freshman and sophomore mistakes, lack of depth, injuries, anemic offense, etc." I don't know how much of the problems can be blamed on the coaches. They don't have magic wands.

There's not much to say about the offense. Losing Teuhema hurt, leaving two true freshmen in his place, but that's just one position. However, there was only one returning WR with any meaningful experience. The others have to learn to run routes and make tough catches in game conditions. Maybe the passing game will get better when Etling has receivers he can rely on to be where they're supposed to be and catch balls they're supposed to catch.

I just look at this year's defense vs last year's and I'm having trouble making sense of it.

SHouldn't be too difficult. Right now, either by players moving on, transferring, being suspended, hurt, or whatever, we are missing the following right now from last year's defense:
Tre'davious White (1st round pick)
Jamal Adams (1st round pick)
Kendell Beckwith (3rd round pick)
Duke Riley (3rd round pick)
Lewis Neal (UDFA)
Travonte Valentine (bust)
Saivion Smith (transfer to Juco)
Isaiah Washington (transfer to Juco)
Frank Herron (suspended)

So that's 5 starters on defense and 9 players from the rotation. Then you have Arden Key who is clearly not even close to being in shape and only out there because we have no choice.

Here were our starters Saturday against Syracuse:
DE Rash. Lawrence (1st game since BYU)
NT Greg Gilmore
DE C. LaCouture
BLB Arden Key (out of shape)
MLB Tyler Taylor (Freshman)
ROVE Devin White (Sophomore)
NICK Kary Vincent Jr (Freshman)
CB Donte Jackson
SS John Battle
FS Grant Delpit (Freshman)
CB And. Williams (Freshman)

We started 4 freshman, 3 in the secondary, and one more underclassman in Devin White. Lacouture doesn't appear to be the same post injury. Key is grossly out of shape and ineffective. Lawrence was playing his first game this season since BYU. Donnie Alexander was suspended the first half. We only played a total of SIX in our DL rotation. By the second half, we were getting no push, giving their offense plenty of time to run around and make plays. When your defensive line isn't effective and your secondary and linebackers are young, that is a bad combination. Those young players will get out of position, and it's harder to mask when the defensive line isn't getting any pressure.

We flat out have no depth on defense and are extremely young. That is the difference between this year's defense and the defenses to which we have come accustomed over the years.

This also filters down from our offense. Our offense cannot eat up clock running the ball due to our piss poor OL play, so our drives have been shorter and our already thin defense has been on the field too much and get tired.

Other than this I agree. Lawrence definitely played vs BYU. Looking at the players staffing the D it's amazing how well they have played at times, then the resulting bumble frick mind whiffs. Can't buy experience nor multi-year strength and conditioning gains for true freshmen.

That's right inject your baseless O hating crap in here. This is O's first year. LSU will not look like an O team until 2019. Next year we will see more and more of what an O team will look like.

What exactly does an O team look like, and how will we know when we see it?

Youth, and more youth. When Battle went out in the 2d half due to an injury RS FR Monroe replaced him. On the next passing down we had the following DB's in the game:
CB Greedy Williams/FR
CB Donte Jackson/JR
S Monroe/RS FR
S Delpit/FR
Nickel Vincent/FR
Enough said about any secondary breakdowns....just will not get it done, especially early, in the SEC.
Add that we have 2 very AVG Sr DL, rest are SO/FR (not counting Key as DL), a SO thumper at ILB, with 1st yr starting SR LBs Alexander and Thompson = a young, inexperienced D that will take it's lumps early. I fully expect them to play better as the season progresses, IF they stay healthy, and next year they should be VERY effective. Is what it is on that side of the ball....

Not only missed tackles, but total loss of containment on the outside from the DE's! Watch both Key and Chassion the crash in and leave the outside open MULTIPLE times a game!

I think it is... hope it is a good thing.

LSU just went through a huge turnover at DB, big loses on the DL and OMG the OL. Lost a bunch of good players due to normal circumstances and compounded by huge coaching changes loses on the line.

That is a huge hit. Hard to look good when the trenches suck arse.

We will see as the season progresses and as the years pass. Just saying it is not realistic to think that LSU regardless of the coach is going to win 11 regular season games this year with this personnel.
