McClendon's first coaching job was as an assistant at Vanderbilt University in 1952. In 1953, he came to LSU as an assistant under head coach Gaynell Tinsley. He was retained as an assistant when Paul Dietzel took over the team in 1955. In 1958, McClendon helped Dietzel coach LSU to its first recognized national championship. At the end of the 1961 season, Dietzel left LSU and picked McClendon to be his successor. McClendon served as the LSU head coach for the next 18 years (1962–1979), the longest tenure of any football coach in LSU history.

McClendon was an Assistant Only. Dietzel hired McClendon to take his place. A Head Coach hiring a Head Coach? The Rant would have melded down to the Core of the Earth!!!

I doubt it. LSU hired a dl coach who is grossly under qualified and a good majority of "fans" are ecstatic with the hire.

Yeah, and the OC in 1979 under Cholly Mac made $30k. Night and day difference.

I don't think Dietzel hired McClendon to take his place. I don't think Dietzel had that much sway. People were pretty pissed at him for leaving. In fact Charlie Mac was originally insulted that he was not invited to go with Dietzel to West Point. Dietzel said that Mac was not asked because Dietzel knew he would get the LSU job. Mac was hired because he was the architect of the great defenses that made LSU so successful. 18 years later he was still a great defensive coach. The problem was that when it came to changing with the times on offence, he was just as stubborn and hard headed as Miles would be. Just as Miles always lived in Saban's shadow, McClendon never could measure up to the charismatic Paul Dietzel. The more things change the more they stay the same.

In 1961, many schools and cities were legally segregated

Kind of a way of showing that times have changed

Jones and Woodley didn't play together. Believe it was Paul Lyons with Bert.

Woodley and Ensminger played together

Mac had several QBs go down with injuries, and he started playing two to not get caught w/o an experienced QB.

This - Jim Corbett was looking at various candidates when it looked like Kentucky was going to hire McClendon as HC. He then made the offer to Cholly Mac.

Probably cheated Bert Jones out of a Heisman and himself/his team out of a NC.

My Dad never accepted Mac. He was a help Mac pack guy from the start and when there were some bring Mac back chants under Stovall my Dad said, "you'll never hear me say that".

Mac's biggest weakness that differentiates him from Miles is he was a poor recruiter. Corbett and Governor McKeithen would do a lot of the recruiting for him and when they were out of the mix and the black athlete became prominent Mac struggled to keep up.

In his last 7 seasons he only beat one team that ended the season in the Top 20 and none in the top 15.
