Prior to his time at LSU, Holoweiko held a successful faculty appointment at Michigan State University

Well, "appointment" at Michigan State = glorified graduate assistant. He definitely WAS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the marching band.

Well, according to the Youtube evidence of this work, I'm not impressed.

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Simon Holoweiko, Associate Director of Bands, will serve as the next Director of the Golden Band from Tigerland.

The band department at LSU (under Damon Talley) is so "good," they cannot even update their own web page with this information....wow.

We are also excited to welcome Weston Lewis back to LSU as Visiting Assistant Director of Bands for the upcoming season.

What a (woke) joke.....this is from his bio, "..... a Co-Chair of the LSU School of Music Student Diversity & Inclusion Organization. " So, now the LSU marching band is being led by a "wokester" and a "youngster." Oh....by the way, the "other" assistant director of bands (Rob Dowie) DOES NOT HAVE A DEGREE IN MUSIC. HE MANAGES SWIMMING POOLS.

I just looked at TGBFTL Facebook page and to my surprise there were hundreds of posts thanking Dr Jones & welcoming the new directors and no negative comments... the only thing close was asking to get rid of the Latin Flare & getting more precision in their shows...

I was really surprised to see that, or did the moderator of that page delete negative comments?

Hubba-hubba!

Those were great days. She and Dr. Wickes ran a great band in those days.

Most of us are still "connected" with the band in some form, even if only social media, or doing alumni games. I don't think people want to openly comment on their thoughts due to not wanting to harm the band itself. That's truly the kast thing we want.

Correct.

That's not what we're (Tiger Band Alums) saying privately though.

TBA's are not "Happy Campers" right now.

Incredibly "Weak" resume's here on these hires.

It's more of the same Mike Archer style "Promote the Assistant" BS from Talley, but that's pretty much what we expected.

In Talley's single defense, it was incredibly late in the Summer and not enough time before the season starts to advertise and interview anybody else. (Not that he would have done that if more time were available) This entire situation is a carbon copy of when Linda Moorhouse abruptly resigned over the Summer of 2010 and there was no other choice, that late right before the football started, but to promote Assistant Roy King.

BTW, why does LSU/Talley have to go to all the way to Texas to find a "Visiting" Assistant Director of Bands? So, there's absolutely nobody in the entire State of Louisiana that could fill that job. (Rob Dowie is already listed as the "Assistant Director of Bands." )

Nothing to do now except to wait and see what kind of "Product" Koloweiko puts on the field. Dude may be another young Frank Wickes in the making, but we don't know that or have enough evidence as of yet to form an opinion.

Finally, some good news to report. The new LSU School of Music Dean is a former Tiger Band member. LINK ]LINK

They basically took a former drum major who wasn’t actually a music major and created some position for him years ago.

The guy being “Assistant Director of Bands” is an insult to any music teacher, even someone teaching inner city EBR schools.
That's been happening within the Football Program for as long as I can remember.

Hey, I'll take a job on the GBFTL Staff. (I don't have a degree in Music either) How about "Assistant General Manager and Assistant Drumline Instructor." No BME (Bachelor of Music Education) either, but I could perform those jobs as well as anybody else they could hire.....

but i fricking love these tgbftl drama threads

TGBFTL is connected at the hip to the FOOTBALL PROGRAM.

LSU Fans and Alumni want a National Championship in football and a Marching Band that's "Bigger, Stronger, Faster and Smarter" than all the other SEC Bands.

We (GBFTL) used to be, but it has greatly declined since the retirement of Frank Wickes; slow and steady regression of the program, mainly due to the "Promote the Assistant" hiring practices of LSU Director of Bands Damon Talley.

Currently, Tiger Band is not even in the upper echelon of the SEC West as far as Marching Bands go.

She took the Head DOB job after Frank Wickes retired in 2010, but soon got into negative talks with then School of Music Dean Lawrence Kaptain concerning "Funding and Finances." (Negative enough that she abruptly resigned and left LSU for the University of Illinois)
quote:

Incorrect....Linda was not promoted to DOB after Frank retired. Linda applied for the DOB position, then told she would never be the DOB (also never got an interview), then decided to go to Illinois. When Linda left, the marching band position was advertised and Roy was selected.
We are talking about semantics here. Linda wasn't "Officially" hired as DOB, but she was next in charge after Wickes. This is my understanding of how things went down. She got into it with Kaptain over "Finances" and was told she was not going to be the Head DOB.

I don't ever remember that the position was advertised and that Roy was selected. It was just late in the Summer and they gave it to Roy based on the "Timing" factor. (Like was just happened with Koloweiko)

Doesn't really matter at this point. All that happened many years ago and ever since then it's been a slow and steady decline of the once great program!

Nope...Frank Wickes worked for over a year to convince the school of music to hire Linda. The school of music + upper administration said "Absolutely Not." By the time Linda realized not only would she not get Frank's job, but she would also not even get an interview...she left.

Roy interviewed (along with at least one person from Texas) for his position, and was selected.
Roy "got into it" about finances with Kaptain and Todd Queen....that's why he's gone.

Bill Swor, the composer of pregame and the Director who won band of the year, put Tiger Band on the Mao. Our halftime drills made Texas Aggie band compliment us. Just FYI

It sure would be nice if Fox News would dial back some of the “woke” conspiracy fear mongering. They’ve got you conservative old farts wound up so tightly it isn’t healthy.

The difference is, football can afford it.

If our music department is facing budget issues, why does a pool guy hold a position that does jobs a grad assistant has done in the past?

As mentioned: zero music degrees, has never run a grade school, middle school, or HS program. Hell, he probably hasn’t fronted a children’s choir. This would be like hiring an equipment manager to coach the football team, and I’m not joking with that analogy.

The “visiting director of bands” dude from Texas is all about DEI. That’s why he’s at LSU.

It's in his bio.

At least Rob Dowie knows and will respect the traditions of Tiger Band. One reason Tiger Band declined is there were no more links to the Frank Wickes and Linda Moorhouse greatness of the past. We had a decade of outside clowns with no knowledge of the past.

Not to sounds like Bo Schembechler but Tiger Band needs an LSU man to be great. They should have hired Corey Spurlin a decade ago after they sacked Roy.

William F. Swor.

I was only under Swor for one year, but he was absolutely a "Marching Band Nick Saban" type that was at the top of his profession.

Yes, we did Texas A&M style Military Drills back then and mixed in a little Pageanty with Ohio State BDBITL type formations. Those were very entertaining halftime shows. (Even though I didn't care for it personally because I was a big Drum Corps/DCI/Madison Scouts Alum guy)

I'd put Wickes in that same category as Swor.

Nick Rouse (76-79) was a very good Director from Denham Springs HS, that took over for Swor, but not quite in the Swor/Wickes category. Rouse was my favorite of the three though.

All of that was a "Long time ago in a Galaxy far far Away" if you compare it to what's being presented on the field currently..........
