I stayed at the Belle hotel about a year ago and it was not nice at all. If you want a Marriott property, there is a courtyard on N Acadian that is close to the Perkins Rd. Area mentioned earlier where there are some good eats. I like George's, it's a local watering hole and you'll have some football on.
There is also a large Marriott in the corporate square area. Farther from campus but BR is mostly a driving town anyway.
If you uber, starting at the chimes is a great idea.

I keep seeing this - do people really think that part of Nicholson is that bad? There's been quite a bit of development along that stretch the past few years. There are FAR worse place in BR, especially on a gameday. I wouldn't walk it, but mainly because it's a couple miles before you even get to walking around campus and very little of it has a sidewalk.

NOLA Bars
Since you have never been, walk all the way up and down Bourbon Street one time. It is unlike anything else you will see in America. I don't recommend you spend all your time here though.
French Quarter: Carousel Bar, O Bar, Bar Tonique, Laffite's Blacksmith shop, Pat O Brien's, Erin Rose, Molly's at the Market
Lower Garden District/Uptown: Avenue Pub, Barrel Proof, Courtyard Brewery, The Bulldog, Cure, Bouligny Tavern, The Delachaise, Ale/Oak, Tipitina's, Cooter Brown's. If you are there Tuesday night and want to see some great music go to The Maple Leaf on Oak Street and watch Rebirth Brass Band.
Warehouse district: The Rusty Nail, CellarDoor
Wildcard: It's a little off the beaten path in a hipster neighborhood, but Bacchanal is a terrific wine shop/bar with legit Jazz music and tapas. It's a lot of fun if you are looking for an authentic experience.

Laffite's Blacksmith shop
One of my favorite spots on Bourbon. It's one of the oldest bars in the United States and has a really cool vibe. Inside is mainly lit by candle/gas lantern and there's usually a solo piano player in the back.

The duck-n-dumplings are are game changer. Got a hip Southern vibe. Service can be a little sketchy at times, but the food more than makes up for it.
Block or so away from the convention center, so bit of a haul back to the FQ. If the weather is nice it's actually a very pleasant walk.

NOLA SIGHTS
Walk through the French Quarter during the day to get an appreciation for the culture and architecture. There are a lot of shops and art galleries on Royal Street and you'll see some good bands playing in the streets here.
Go to Frenchman Street at night and watch live Jazz bands play in clubs and New Orleans Brass bands play in the street.
The WW2 museum is a world class museum and a must see IMO.
Ride the street car down St. Charles Avenue and look out at Audobon Park, Tulane and Loyola Universities, and the historic Victorian Mansions lining the street. Bonus points for you if you can do this with a drink in hand.
Take a tour of Mardi Gras World to see the floats and get a behind the scenes look at the making of Mardi Gras.

Fair enough - I used to deliver pizzas in that market (way, way back in the day) and I had a door gunner. Probably much better now.

On Bourbon St you may be approached and told, "I betcha 20 dollah, I know where yo got dem shoes"... while your footwear is eye balled.
It is a fairly common and well-played out scam on unsuspecting tourists these days, but there is a way out of it.
Pull out a 20 spot and without blinking stare down the Perp and say, "I will take that bet".
Wait for a response, such as "Yo got dem shoes on yo feet" and then quickly retort, "Wrong homey, I got dem shoes up yo arse." Shut up at this point and don't say a word.
Sales 101 ....the first one who talks loses. Hold the stare as long as necessary and you should be scot-free, as you foiled their bet, and they move on to someone else.
However, if you find yourself suddenly surrounded on all sides, take your girl by the hand and run like hell.

Wear your "Cuse gear & you'll get all the drinks & food you can handle, anywhere on campus. No glass cups allowed while walking around the stadium but get plastic go cups from any area Circle K gas station, top optional, and you are good to go. With you bringing your girl & presumably there being other ladies in the group, bring plenty of your own toilet paper. There are plenty of bathrooms all over campus but with 100K+ on campus, they run out early. A must with ladies in tow. For a 6:00 pm kickoff, getting on campus by 9-10 a.m. is not early.

There's a bar right under the Mississippi River bridge downtown west of the past time! Can't go wrong there.

Nobody's mentioned it but it's as hot and humid as as a steam room here in September. Wear shorts and T-shirts and stay hydrated.

That bar under the bridge..Make sure it's the Past Time if you go. Cause back in the 70s the bar across the street was a gay bar. Used to go there and roll the gerbil boys
