they will eventually do it, yes, but I think we'll see Alex Box expands its suites to right and left field, hopefully implement all chairbacks, and a major overhaul of the PMAC before we invest in a luxury hotel inside TS

I never lived in the stadium (or The Rock as it was known colloquially) but those dorms were as bad as everybody says. Only slightly better than Angola.

I lived in South Stadium in 1975. The rooms were big, but it was so hot (no A/C) and very noisy. However, it was a great location before games to tailgate!

I think only a couple of mens dorms had A/C. Powers and Kirby-Smith I believe were the only ones.

I've always thought a great idea would be to convert them to tailgate suites and rent them out per game. No season pass or membership, but rather everyone got a shot at them. TVs, BYOB, a/c...another great money making idea

I spent the night in them in '69,'70,'71 for several home games in a good friends dorm room. I was hot, no A/C is right. They need to be remodeled into rentable party rooms for tailgating groups . Could be very popular and a money maker. I could easily see 3 or 4 guys renting them for $400 or so for a home game. Ad A/C and bathrooms and its a winner.

I don't think it will ever happen.

With all of the security concerns surrounding big events, allowing people to just bring suitcases into the stadium just isn't practical. Way too much chance of a bad guy getting a bad idea.

Also, with all of the set back from the stadium that the new gates provide, it would become a nightmare to create separate lanes for those going to the game and those going to the suites. Of course, you could make it so that once you are inside the perimeter, you could go to either, but I don't think that is practical either since a lot of people will want to walk around the campus once they get settled in their room.

In theory, it's a great idea. It just isn't going to be worth the effort.

asbestos and lead paint abatement will be major arse pain...particularly in the original sections...

would really like to see hatcher, hodges and johnson with added floors and the lower floors rebuilt....at least to my eye, those dorms could support 3 or 4 more additional floors which could be set up as a more modern configuration...

Not as dorm rooms, but as game day apartments or hotel-room type suites, yes.

The problem is, as another poster has already explained, there is a serious asbestos issue with remodeling the rooms. Very expensive.

I lived in North, West and South Stadium dorms in the mid 60s. South was more modern and a bit nicer but definitely not the Ritz. The major advantage was price ($85 per semester) and it was much easier to sneak chicks into your room.

The use them for storage i know a guy who got a tour, and I really want one. They've knocked down most of the walls and opened them up and there's sooooo much shite down there they need for home games.

I lived in west stadium back in '70-'71. It was hot as hell and we had to bring our own fans from home, to cool us off. I was brought up without air conditioning, so the fan suited me well. My next year, I lived in the Pentagon without any air conditioner. After I graduated, I took a job without any airconditioner. A year later, I took another job with AC and to this day, I can't live without an AC. My current and recent past residences all have/had central air. I can't believe how I lived so many years with nothing but a fan. I'm 62 and how many of you older guys remember ceiling fans that were in the attic? I also remember floor furnances during the winter. I'm glad that I remember this crap, because I'll probably be dead or senile in the next five years.

My dad lived in North Stadium back in the early 70's. He said the living conditions were terrible.

I lived on the 5th floor of the Stadium for one semester of my freshman year in '67. Huge room as dorm rooms go; no roommate and quiet hall. Room was newly renovated. No A/C of course. The hall next door was crazy and I don't see how anyone down there studied (they didn't; the serious students, a couple of whom went on to med school, always went to the library).

But the actual rooms were not too bad. Had to be careful on game nights not to walk in the buff down the hall because the halls had windows onto the ramps leading into north stadium seating.

Funny true story adding to the history of the stadium dorms...friend of mine lived in north side dorms in 1979. He and friends "mountain climbed" with ropes, carabiners, and all scaling the wall with a football in tow. Ran onto the field to play football on hallowed grounds even though the only light was a full moon and a couple of flash lights. Then made there way up to press box. Liked a lounge chair so they hooked it up to the ropes and lowered it down to his dorm room. One of the Barney Fife's from Campus Police walked by with the chair suspended in the air and never saw it...walking right through the shadow of the chair on the ground. Yes...my friend lived on the edge...crazy dude.

turn it into a hotel during football season. they'd make their money back in no time

i can tell your degree isn't in business administration. no way in hell a hotel that books for about 15% of the year does anything but lose money. ok, it may book some out of football season but not much. traveling business man and tourists would find it very inconvenient. of course, a marketing survey would be more revealing but i would be extremely skeptical that spending the money to remove the asbestos, remodel and add the amenities demanded by the traveling public today could even appoach a break even point. it would be cool but i doubt anything will ever be done about the old rooms. they weren't even air conditioned.
