Why not put in Perkins at Star or rushing from the end or spy.

that’s literally the problem: you just named a Secondary position (star) a DL/Edge position and then assignment usually manned by a LB (Spy)

That’s the issues. he has like 1 skill from watch but both a whole tool set for any.

I want Perkins to succeed in the NFL if for no other reason it’s a nice touch when the announcers mention LSU. But I don’t know what role he will play in the NFL? A 220 pound OLB is not going to be TJ Watt. He’s going to have to cover backs in coverage and be a sure tackler to succeed at OLB in the NFL. Something he didn’t do at LSU.

A lot of what you’re saying is true. This has been a total failure by Kelly, complete disorganization and lack of development with this player. Fans really don’t understand how chaotic and disorganized it’s been moving him all over the place.

But we've seen major development from other players on that side of the ball. At some point you have to lay it at the feet of Perkins. You wanna be an NFL player you have to be able to have disciplined eyes and tackle well. Baker has a great track record of developing LBs and I truly believe had Perkins not gotten hurt he would have improved playing that Sam LB/Star role. Sucks he got injured so we won't know, but I do know as of game 4 of his junior season he didn't have an every down position he was worth a dang at and that's on him.

All I am saying is with the vacuum of a vaunted player missing, Weeks stepped up and became more dominant IMO. I saw gaps being plugged that weren't before. That's all. I'm not saying we're world beaters, but it just looked to my eyes that Weeks responded well to Perkins absence- in a way that might benefit the team going forward. We looked like we were hitting harder at the line- mostly due to Weeks. Sometimes waiting for the guy who everyone says is a star to act stops others from acting- by either deference or trying not to disrupt or steal thunder.

Right but development at a position. What happened with Perk was the start 2022 were playing Ward, Brooks and Burns, 3 safeties, together with the 2 LBs Penn and Jones. Perk was inserted in certain situations at Star when we wanted to blitz and disrupt. He was also played at LB only when we’d use him as a spy removing one of the other backers a lot of times. Last year he’s moved to LB and had a good year but was less of a pass rusher. As the season went on and our D couldn’t generate pressure he was moved around some to blitz. This year he was moved strictly to LB, we went with some 3-3 looks vs South Carolina and at that point started to move him around again. So he’s never been played at a position for more than a few games at a time and his natural LB position doesn’t exist in this defense. What we should’ve done is kept him where he was as a freshman even if it meant reducing his snaps some, although I don’t know why you’d have Burns ahead of him anyway. That way he can develop eventually while still playing where he’s most effective until that time.

I think the playing him at the Sam backer and the star which is what they went with at SC and against UCLA was going to be the winning combination eventually. Baker is really good at what he does and he would have figured it out. My point is that when they moved Perk to Will LB, it made perfect sense. It isn't a hard position to play. You can spy from that position. You can rush the passer from that position. You drop into zone coverage from that position. All Perkins had to learn to do was read his keys and fit the run and presto perfect position for him to be impactful and stay on the field. Perkins just doesn't have the discipline nor the tackling ability to play that position. Run fitting isn't a difficult concept so I'm sure Baker assumed Perkins would figure that out. No matter what position he played at every position on defense requires you to be disciplined and tackle. Perkins doesn't do either of those well which is why he struggles as an every down player at any position. Others guys on this defense have shown growth and improvement with less reps. At some point Perkins has to own it.

I agree. You know, with all the explosiveness Perkins displayed his first season, I can understand all the gnashing of teeth over coaching decisions that seem to have handcuffed his production.
With a new coordinator in Baker (whom I will absolutely give the benefit of any doubt to), his production still trailed expectations.
Have we collectively stopped to think that perhaps reduced production/effectiveness with the scheme, position, etc. were not necessarily House's or Baker's fault?

Whit Weeks took a step up last night. I think he will be more effective now that Perkins is out.

Was that going so fast you think he needs to slow down?

No basically he was saying Weeks is the answer now based on his performance Saturday which was against South Alabama. Learn how to read what he was trying to say.

Weeks is a legitimate Mike linebacker, (not even sure if that’s what he is playing rn) but can go sideline to sideline.
