We crunched the numbers on the amount of underclassmen at P5 schools leaving early for the NFL.

Well before members of LSU’s 2014 signing class took a college snap, some of them already had their sights on the 2017 NFL draft.

Will Clapp can attest to this. He heard the chatter from his teammates even before their first practice together.

There is an epidemic at LSU that is becoming ingrained in its purple-and-gold fabric: Underclassmen, even those projected as late- or mid-round selections, are declaring for the NFL draft at a higher rate than any other college program in the nation.

Over the past six years, 32 non-seniors at LSU declared for the draft. That is eight more than the next closest team, Florida State (24). Florida is next at 23 before a jumble of programs round out the top 10: Alabama, Clemson and OhioState (20 each), Southern California (19), Stanford and Notre Dame (15 each) and UCLA (14).

Since 2013, the Southeastern Conference leads all Power 5 leagues in declaring underclassmen at 154. In a 14-school conference, the Tigers make up a whopping 20 percent of them.

quote:

“It hurts you, but the reality is in that next recruiting year, you better have more guys,” former coach Les Miles said. “The ability to market that, it’s like Kentucky (basketball) with the one-and-done.”

Miles was leading the program during this trend’s beginning in Baton Rouge. He used the NFL as a recruiting tool. LSU coaches pitched to prospects a three-year-and-out model, promising to have them NFL-ready after Year 3. They also used departing juniors — and their vacant starting positions — as ways to woo kids to campus for early playing time.

Said Clapp, recalling his classmates’ recruitment: “The coaches were saying, ‘We get you in and out. Three-year deal.’ ”

Why does LSU lead nation in underclassmen declaring for draft since 2013?

The problem is in the 4-7th and the UDFA's. LSU, Bama, and tOSU are much closer together in the first two categories, 1st and 2nd-3rd. Bama and tOSU are keeping their lower tier guys another year which for us this year is two CB's...

I've been saying the same thing for years. It's pathetic and inexcusable. I will forever blame Les Miles' stupidity and stubbornness for wasting all that talent. Down vote all you want, it doesn't change the fact that it's the truth!

Here's to more wasted talent!

You're right, but the talent was not evenly distributed. There weren't great LTs, DTs, Cs and QBs in there, and those are the most important positions on the field.

They were definitely talented, but not balanced.

This is where Miles went wrong with his recruiting pitch. Now it has affected us for years to come. Unlike basketball, you need to physically develop guys to be ready to play at this level. They don’t just come in physically ready to play with grown men in the trenches. There is also a large mental curve in football because of how simple playbooks are in high school. While it looks good on paper and recruiting rankings, it is just not a successful model to follow in order to win a championship. That is why Miles is no longer here. He couldn’t win a championship once he began to recruit with that model. (To go along with the inability to recruit and develop a QB.)

The kids that are recruited are 90% from inner city schools, most of these kids have no other future except for pro football so as soon as they are eligible they are gone , look at that list of schools, the higher education schools are at the bottom of the list because of the type of student athletes that they recruit.

in the 2015 NFL draft 4 lsu players were drafted. 19 other programs had more players drafted. we had 1 all sec player

in the 2016 NFL draft lsu had 5 players drafted. 6 different sec teams either surpassed or matched that amount of players drafted.

since 20010 bama has had less than 7 players drafted just ONE time.

since 2009 lsu has had less than 7 players drafted 6 times

LSU's numbers add up 6+10+6+4=26 but it says 32 declared. Up and down the whole chart it doesn't make sense.

if half of those guys stayed around for their senior year we would have more hardware.

I don't see LSU being a three year program being a positive.
