BTW, I started this thread because I watched a player take a 3-0 meatball down the pipe with bases loaded, then took another strike, then struck out swinging.

fricking frustrating. It was easily the best pitch he saw.

MLB but probably close to college.

Interesting article.

In that context, why wouldn’t a hitter take advantage of any slim opportunity to jump on a juicy pitch? As A’s All-Star third baseman Matt Chapman explained recently, via Sports Illustrated, it was likely that the 3-0 pitch Tatis swung at -- a fastball in the zone -- was going to be the best pitch he saw in that plate appearance.

“If you take that 3-0 pitch, then you’re 3-1 and you probably get a 3-1 slider,” Chapman said. “And then you’re at 3-2 and you probably get a 3-2 changeup, and there’s no telling what happens.”

I hate to break it to you, but you have drifted away from your original premise that batters aren’t given the green light on 3-0 counts. I know you assume you are right, but the odds say no. You may want to take the L, save face, and live to fight another day. This is not a winnable fight.

So you’re saying 7 out of 34 pitches right down the middle on 3-0 in the majors are swung on. So that’s over 20% of those pitches that we know of where a hitter is given the green light. I would think it’s safe to assume that at least a few more of those balls, the batter was given the green light and just chose not to swing. Let’s say 3. Bringing it up to 29% of the time where batters have the option to swing.

That stat also shows that 66% of the time, a “meatball” is not thrown on 3-0. Keeping with the same 29%, that’s another 20 times where a batter is given the green light.

So, you can’t really say the green light is never given.

Well those are MLB stats. I’m sure college is much much less.

If you’re standing in the batters box of a MLB game, you’re a very good hitter already.

I don’t watch any MLB, but I watch a good bit of college baseball. I can’t remember last time I saw a batter take a cut at a 3-0 pitch.

You act like it happens regularly.

Ok, I was trying not to be an arse and present refuting evidence that disproves your theory. But it’s obvious your mind is made up and there is simply no way to make you see the light. So I’m just going to watch the game now and enjoy some Tiger baseball.

Doughty just swung on 3-0. I guess someone sent this thread to Jay Johnson and your argument was so compelling that he gave him the green light.

Or maybe it's just something LSU has done literally all season.

He’s already established that Jay Johnson is the exception.

If the hitter is a good trusted batter or just on a hot streak and you have a known fastball count that needs to be over the plate, why not let him take a cut at it?

Also you could tell Berry was wanting to hammer his 3-0 pitch but it was way outside

Multiple? Where the batter swung at a 3-0 pitch?

There might be only a half dozen 3-0 counts in a game.
