If Naz was consistently stonger with the ball, he’d be PERFECT to break a down at the high post. He had a tendency to lose it though. Probably still our best option there. Heck you could almost put Mays there if the guys on the court make sense.

He is 6 4 and he is a slasher scorer. It would put the defense in a bind. The best answer is to,vary the player at the free throw line. Flash a post guy some of the time. Flash a wing player some of the time. Make the defense react and respond. The flashing of a wing to the foul line is the classic way to beat a two man front zone for about six decades. For the wing to be effective it must be a timed flash not simply posting up. The offense should vary this with the NAZ at the high post offensive set. Flash NAZ to line. Then Naz rolls and cuts down... wing guynflashes and fills behind him. Almost always works. Have to be able to,hit the free throw line jumper or drive finsish/dish. Smart can do this. The defense will adjust and then you vary it If they have to stop the flashing wing guy. It opens the three pointer at top of key. And or makes it easier to get to bigs on the block. Have to be able to make the pass quickly and make the shot though. Short corner and deep corner also open. But our guys have not been able to accomplish anything from either spot

Michigan State prides itself on playing great man defense, I highly doubt they play zone unless Tremont is eating Winston up. We do have a several mismatches in our favor IMO though.

I had a conversation with a co-worker who is from Mich and a MSU alumnus. I said that LSU struggles against zone but you guys don't play a lot of zone. He said we play essentially no zone and that Izzo is pretty adamant about his man-to-man defense. So I think the post above is exactly right. The only way we will face zone is if we're winning.

Maryland?

It took a while but yes eventually. LSU took too long jacking up 3s or trying to penetrate with Tremont. That is when Maryland made its comeback. They finally put Smart at PG and let him penetrate. That is what concerns me about Beneford. Too too long to make the adjustment.

It's why you have more than one zone quick hitter in your offense. It's just a tool in the toolbox my friend.

Actually you shouldn't set/place anybody at the free throw line but flash players from opposite side of the ball into that open area and have them catch and shoot (Reid, Days, Williams) or dish to a baseline cutter/kick out to 3 pt. shooter if the defense collapses on him.

1. Pray they don't use the zone
2. Throw up brick 3s if they use the zone
3. Keep it close until the last 30 seconds
4. ????
5. Profit

i noticed they started using Naz in the paint to create space for Smart to drive deeper into the paint. Naz would suck up the defense in the center and drive them towards the basket (without the ball) and that would open up the front half of the paint for smart to drive

Attack the zone to create OFF. Break it down, and cause defenders to move which will create space for jump shots and cuts to the basket. Attack, and attack some more.

Not rarely. Never. It will absolutely not be an issue against MSU. Izzo hates zone defense and will not unveil a gimmick this late in the season. Book it.

That is the typical plan. But easier said than done - if you aren't practiced at it, a team like Syracuse will still f_ck you up. They delay their convergence on the free throw line a half beat or so, and the person receiving the pass at the high post can never tell whether to pass or shoot, and the hesitation results in an awkward shot or pass. By the time you get the hang of it, they have turned you over 15 times.

Our problem isn’t solving the zone defense, we’ve solved it all season long. Our problem vs Maryland was that shots didn’t fall and Benford didn’t make the right personnel changes to try and fix that. Our offense vs the zone is perfectly fine, we do all the right things vs zone. It doesn’t matter which defense you’re facing if the ball doesn’t go in you struggle.

That's why I mentioned the catch and shoot part and it needs to be a big to shoot over the top of the defense. If you catch and shoot and hit a couple, they will be quick to converge and that's when you start dishing the ball. I agree it's hard if you're not aversed at playing/running zone offenses, it can be troublesome. I also like to see more penetration by the guards, which LSU did late that got them some buckets. The best killer of a zone though, is hitting outside shots and had LSU been able to knock 3 or so that they missed that game wouldn't have been close.

We have consistently fallen in love with the 3. It’s not our strength. Shoot it enough to keep them honest but do what you do well. When we shoot 3s we also are not getting to the foul line and creating fouls is a strength. I am not saying stop, just find the right balance and stay within yourself. Get the other team in foul trouble and make the free throws.

It feels like we too often try and shoot over the zone and let go of our lead. Others have said the same so I don’t feel on an island here.

I agree with you, they aren't the best 3 pt. shooting team, just was stating that is the best way to get a team out of a zone, is by knocking down 3's. Their strength is penetrating, and stated that they should do that. It's tough to penetrate a zone sometimes but if you can, you can create some good scoring opportunities.
