I didn't even realize that. It sort of makes sense that the SWC invited LSU & Ole Miss to join up with them in December 1914, which was over 6 years before the Southern Conference was even formed.
Yeah, Doc, I guess that was a little after your eligibility was used up.

LSU played occasionally in S'port up through the late 50s. They played Baylor there in 1959, Cannon's last year.
In fact the reason Independence (then State Fair) Stadium was increased from 30K to 50K was because Gov. John McKeithen wanted them to resume that tradition and promoted state funding. That resulted in the 1975 game against Rice.
As much as I'd like to see it, the dollars will never make sense. The stadium is too small as is, and it wouldn't make sense for further expansion for one game. Plus there's too much money now to make on home games or at places like Jerryland.
BTW, I was at the LSU/Moo State game in Jackson back in 1978. That's probably not a very good stadium or part of town anymore.

Tulane stadium. Pretty big... not sure where anyone parked.

LSU also used to play Arkansas in Shreveport sometimes. I remember when I was quarterback and I led LSU to the 1908 SIAA championship we played our last game of the year against Arkie in S-port, and beat them 36-4.
Doc, did you play in that game LSU played in Havana?

That was the last pro-game at Tulane Stadium. Florida and Nebraska played the Sugar a few weeks earlier during ABC's trial period of the game being on New Year's Eve.

Apparently it used to be a nightmare. At least that's what my Dad tells me.

I was at the game in Oxford in 1989. It was first time to play LSU in Oxford since 1960. LSU was leading 35-10 toward the end of the third quarter.
We came back and cut it to 35-30 before time ran out.

We played them there in 1957 for sure - I was in the Pershing Rifles drill team and my wife went into the stadium alone - all the Arkies yelling "soo-pig" almost scared her to death.

Driveways and yards in the neighborhood. Also, people would walk, take the streetcar and Claiborne bus. Neutral ground of Claiborne also.

I was at the 1960 game in Oxford - caught the student train near Alex Box field after midnight Friday for the Saturday afternoon game. Tigers went into the game with four straight losses against the undefeated Webels. Ole Miss settled for a late 4th quarter fg to salvage a tie.

The tie costs the 10-0-1 Rebels dearly as the 8-2 Minnesota Golden Gophers become national champs FTW!

59, 60 & 61, only blemishes on Rebels' regular season record during those three years were two losses and a tie to LSU. Probably cost them the NC all three of those years.
