During these times when playing Ole miss at "home" we played in Jackson. Why is this, and then, in the 91 and 92 seasons we played twice in mississippi instead of going to BR

Because their stadium sucked and couldn't pack 'em in like Tiger Stadium.
Starting in 1992, those kinds of arrangement were done away with in the SEC by the formal scheduling format of the 12-team superconference, although a couple of series continued to be played at "neutral" sites at Birmingham or Jacksonville for several years.

Starting in the early 60's, Ole Miss played most of their big games in either Jackson, or Memphis such as Tennessee. LSU played them in '65 through '87 every odd year in Jackson .
The 1991 one game was back in Jackson after a game in Oxford in 1989 (first since 1960). The 92 game was Ole Miss' home game again as '92 was the first year of Arkansas and South Carolina's entree into the league so there was a lot of juggling to ensure every team 4 home games. We played Alabama at home those two years as well.
FWIW,most LSU-Ole Miss games in the 50's and early 60's were in Baton Rouge every year.

Same with Bama (except for the occasional game in Mobile), I think. I don't think they started regularly scheduling home games in Birmingham against LSU until 1964.

we played in Jackson. Why is this
The stadium in Jackson was bigger than the ones in Oxford & Starkville. I belive we usually played Moo State in Jackson too.
We also would play Ole Miss in Jackson as part of a double header (not sure when this ended) with Miss State & Bama being the other game. Major hassle of clearing the stadium & parking lot between the day and night game !

LSU also used to play Arkansas in Shreveport sometimes. I remember when I was quarterback and I led LSU to the 1908 SIAA championship we played our last game of the year against Arkie in S-port, and beat them 36-4.

Ole Miss and Miss.St. once had a contract to each play 3 home games in Jackson Memorial Stadium. I remember at least from 72 until sometime in the 80's when both contracts expired and they both began playing all home games at their home field. Many years there was a double header at JMS featuring LSU v. Ole Miss and Miss.St playing Alabama. First game at 1:30 and the nitecap at 6:30. Usually went to both because MSU and Bama were our next 2 opponents.

I attended a LSU game in Shreveport in the fall of 1975....I can't remember who we played though...
Texas A&M was another game that was always in Baton Rouge up until the series stopped in 1974 or 75...

True. Veterans Memorial pretty much sucked also.

Texas & OU still play every year in Dallas too.

Rice. Neutral site games used to be fairly common in the 60's and 70's. Florida played some games in Tampa in addition to the 'cocktail game'. Auburn played Tennessee at Legion Field from '56 to '78 with the exception of '74.

And from 1936 to 1964: 24 games were played in Baton Rouge, 3 games in Oxford and the one Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.
It was too big a game to waste in that dump in Oxford. Both teams made a lot more money this way.
Not many people realieze that from the 30's through the 60's Tiger Stadium and Tulane Stadium were two of the best venues for football in the South.
And for the poster who mentioned the series with Arkansas in Shreveport, from 1913 to 1936 LSU and Arkansas played EVERY year in Shreveport. That's 23 games in a row - not counting 1918.

Also, I like that they're bringing back the Notre Dame versus Army game in The Bronx. It was the biggest game in college sports in the 40's, but I doubt that West Point would have been an adequate venue. ND also used to play Navy in Baltimore (rather than Annapolis) around that time, and sometimes even in Cleveland, OH. And then the 2 huge games versus "Great Lakes Navy" in 1942 & 1943 in Chicago were a couple of remarkable matchups in the history of CFB.

Yep. The Yale Bowl and the Rose Bowl were probably the first 2 football stadiums to ever have a really large seating capacity, and going into the 40's and 50's, there weren't too many others larger than 60-70k.

I didn't even realize that. It sort of makes sense that the SWC invited LSU & Ole Miss to join up with them in December 1914, which was over 6 years before the Southern Conference was even formed.

It's hard to believe today but the old Tulane Stadium was probably the largest stadium in the South well into the 1970's.....with a max capacity of over 85,000....

Doubleheader weekends in Jackson. LSU vs. Ole Miss or Miss St. Alabama played which ever team LSU wasn't playing.
