I’m so sorry to hear about your dad. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I remember your dad very well as I was in school and when he played.
Many people forget how good the defense was that season. The Tigers got screwed IMO.

My father, Tony Russell, who played for the Tigers from 1967-1969 died Thursday at the age of 72.

My condolences to you and yours. Recently we found out my 17 year old son has stage 4 cancer. He is at St. Judes right now getting treatments. I'm praying he will make it.

Despite LSU finishing as runner-up in the SEC, they were not selected for any of the 11 bowl games. Meanwhile, six (6) other SEC teams were selected: 1st place Tennessee was selected to play in the Gator Bowl. 3rd place Auburn 8-2 (5-2) was selected to play in the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl. 4th place Florida 8-1-1 (3-1-1) was also selected to play in the Gator Bowl. 5th place Ole Miss 7-3 (4-2) was selected to play in the Sugar Bowl. 6th place Georgia 5-4-1 (2-3-1) was selected to play in the Sun Bowl. And, of course... 8th place Alabama 6-4 (2-4) was selected to play in the Liberty Bowl. That is remarkable.

The rest of the story: My dad was a junior that year on the team and it was the seniors that voted to not go to a bowl. Later, each member of the team got a small trophy with a “screw” on it because LSU got screwed out of a better bowl game.
They were invited to a smaller bowl game but the seniors voted not to go.

I'm so sorry for your loss, but so happy you shared part of your Dad's story with us. It sounds like your dad lived a good life (albeit too short) and left behind a wonderful legacy.

Sorry for the passing of your dad. Sounds like a great guy. Prayers for all of your family and you. I listened to the Tigers on the radio when he played. He'll have great seats in heaven to watch now.

He played on one of the Tigers best teams in 1969, losing once and not going to a bowl

I'm going to say it - this was the best LSU team that did not play for/win a national championship.

Freakin' Ole Miss - that Ole Miss team was frustrating. They lost to Kentucky and Bama by a combined 2 points, but then lost to Houston by 2 TDs.

They also CRUSHED #3 Tennessee 38-0 after our game and ended up beating #3 Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl. They beat 4 Top 10 teams (including us) that year with one of Johnny Vaught's last squads.

RIP Tony Russell

I am very sorry for your lose. I met your dad through business many years ago and he was truly a genuine guy. That ‘69 team is my favorite LSU team. We spent some time talking about that year and I really enjoyed the time he took with me that day.
Prayers to you and your family.
